Though FORBIDDEN DREAMS samples pieces from three Yanni albums--OUT OF SILENCE, CHAMELEON DAYS, and KEYS TO IMAGINATION--it's not your ordinary by-the-numbers best-of compilation. The intention here is to highlight Yanni's expertise in the art of musically complementing and mirroring your daily activities, from sunrise to sunset. "After the Sunrise" is a centering and uplifting composition, ideal for early morning sun salutations, while the subtly dance-oriented "Walkabout" should serve to both quicken the pulse-rate and brush away any remaining sleep-induced fogginess.
The title track is a KOYAANISQATSI-type arpeggiated romp around the synthesizer, punctuated by thundering percussion, while "Secret Vows," like most of the other tracks from OUT OF SILENCE included here, is delicate and lyrical. "Days of Summer" is about as close as you'll get to a Yanni rock track, but any resulting feelings of disorientation you may experience will soon be forgotten, as the album returns to familiar harmoniously upbeat territory with the closing "Paths of Water." FORBIDDEN DREAMS is an excellent primer for the Yanni oeuvre, and should find favor with those wishing to dip a toe into his ambient textures.
