Industry Reviews
Conveniently compiling public health information recently published by various agencies of the U.S. government, this volume addresses diseases transmitted through food, water, animals, or insects and also the health concerns of international travelers. A strength is its coverage of diseases recently in the news, such as deadly E. coli and hantavirus outbreaks. Other topics are of perennial interest, such as how safely to prepare Thanksgiving turkey or avoid travelers' diarrhea. Coverage often overlaps between documents (there are two different tables on how long to keep frozen food), and format varies: some selections are written in simple question-and-answer form for the general public, while others are rather technical recommendations for healthcare personnel. Another more consistent and convenient source for most of the same information is Phyllis Stoffman's Family Guide to Preventing and Treating 100 Infectious Illnesses (LJ 7/95). Stoffman's book also provides specific treatment recommendations and sources for more information. For larger consumer health collections. [Volumes 5 and 6 in this series, Cardiovascular Diseases and Disorders Sourcebook and Respiratory Diseases and Disorders Sourcebook, are reviewed above. Ed.] Marit S. MacArthur, Auraria Lib., Denver
Breitman

A collection of nontechnical documents about diseases that are transmitted by infectious organisms found in food and water, carried by animals and insects, or are of special concern to international travelers. Separate chapters in the section on food and water borne diseases cover commonly occurring bacterial, viral, and parasitic diseases; special risks to people with immune system problems; and methods to prevent food contamination. Animal and insect borne diseases covered include Hantavirus, Lyme disease, plague, rabies, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and St. Louis encephalitis. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.
