This step-by-step guide to creating folk finishes is small but informative. Focus is on the alteration of the character of the wood as opposed to the painting of decorative scenes on the wood. The techniques covered in the book are: graining, marbelizing, fantasy finishes, scene painting, antiquing and other decorative techniques.
I especially enjoyed learning how to create the illusion of bird's eye maple and how to create smoke graining with a lit candle. These are unusual techniques hard to find information on.
The instructions are clear and the photos are just beautiful. I would recommend this book along with "Paint Techniques" by David Japp as good reference books for those who enjoy refinishing furniture.
