I've always loved this version of The Fog. Suspenseful, and dramatic. Most of the acting is well-done. It's an old movie; but, fun and enjoyable to watch again and again.

  Classic The Fog
Review created: 11/04/08

This movie is a classic!!! Addrienne Barbeau, Hal Holbrook, Jamie Lee Curtis, Janet Leigh (PSYCHO SHOWER LADY), Richard Cyphers and other greats did one heck of a job back in 1980 for that era's capabilities. Today, things are all digital and more intense but never as scary as This classic and many others of its same era, such as halloween and Friday the 13th. I Highly recommend this movie to anyone, even if they are a younger generation so they can see what real work was back then.
I have this on VHS and wanted it on DVD and the original version instead of the updated new version. To me that version wasn't quite as scary. There is no substitute for Classic Horror.

  The Fog

It was a great movie about a tallship that wrecked off the coast because it was guided by a campfire at a beach in the fog, which was mistaken for a lighthouse. The dead vowed that they would come back on the 100 yr. anniversary of that night to kill those in that town. The special effects are great! My kind of movie. I have not seen the remake of this movie and don't know how it can be any better than this, the original.

  The Fog [1980]
Review created: 11/04/07

The story here, narrated by old Mr Machen [John Houseman], tells of a colony of lepers trying to manoeuvre their vessel through a thick fog that hangs low over Spivey Point; they are drawn towards the light of a campfire burning brightly on the shore. Lured towards the campfire the Elizabeth Dane crashes into the rocks and the founding members of Antonio Bay filch the cargo of gold carried within the vessel, enough riches to build their town. They murder the crew of the Elizabeth Dane.

On the 100th anniversary of the small Californian fishing town, the sinister fog returns, rolling in from the ocean towards the mainland. Hidden within the fog is the phantom clipper ship carrying the zombie-phantom crew that perished along with the vessel a century before. They are now back seeking revenge for the atrocities committed against them - and it is the descendants of the murderers [or conspirators] that now have to pay with their lives.

Father Malone [Hal Holbrook] finds an ancient journal hidden within the walls of the church that tells the story of how Antonio Bay was built with gold stolen from Blake and his crew. But the information held within the journal is seemingly of little use and the townspeople are forced to battle the fog creatures in order to survive until dawn, when hopefully the fingers of mist will recede back out to sea.

'The Fog' is John Carpenter's most accomplished film after 'Halloween'. Both movies rely little upon special effects and excessive amounts of blood; rather, the viewer is chilled to the bone by Carpenter's excellent camera skills and his judicious choice of location. He has created a traditional ghost story with 'The Fog', where vengeful spirits return from their [watery] grave; the Californian coastline indeed resembles parts of the UK like Cornwall where tales of smugglers were rife in the nineteenth century. His use of the lighthouse - out of which Stevie Wayne [Adrienne Barbeau] runs her local radio station - contributes a haunting feel to the film, as does the ghostly clipper ship, the Elizabeth Dane.

The film also benefits from a great cast ranging from veteran actors John Houseman [Scrooged] and Hal Holbrook [Creepshow] to then-newcomers to the horror scene Jamie Lee Curtis [Halloween], Tom Atkins [Creepshow, Halloween III] and Adrienne Barbeau [Creepshow, Swamp Thing].

  Fun B-horror Movie!!!
Review created: 10/12/06

These B-horror movies can be a lot of fun sometimes, especially with your friends. I have to say this actually can be creepy at times and is better than its remake. Old school genre actors make this one a cult classic in its own right. Not Carpenter's best but certainly entertaining for a 'foggy' night, LOL. Great for Carpenter or B-horror fans. Others should settle for a rental at the most. 3/5

  The Fog ws special edition

This movie has the outtakes, and the bloopers.
The making of the Fog, the story board.

This is the original film, by John Carpenter, written and directed by John Carpenter. Starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Hal Holbrook, Adrienne Barbeau, John Houseman, and Janet Leigh.

This version, the original has the Fog, the schooner, the minister of the town on the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the town, comes across his great-grandfathers ledger, and the ledger, shows it was the founding fathers, who accepted their fate, for what they were doing, in founding and preotecting their town. Unbeknownest to them, their descendants 100 years later would be cursed.

This film like all original films, should rate higher... about 4.9. As the special effects of our time, were the best they could do. But, just as then even now, the outtakes and the bloopers...are the best part of any collection.

For film buffs, and people who like a classical scarey movie like The Fog and Halloween...this is up there and should be part of your collection.
