Album Notes
Personnel includes: McCoy Tyner (piano); Gary Bartz (sopranino, soprano & alto saxophones, clarinet); Joe Ford, Ron Bridgewater (soprano, alto & tenor saxophones, flute); Charles Fambrough, Eric Kamau Gravatt, Guilherme Franco.
McCoy Tyner was always a powerhouse pianist, but his cleanly articulated torrents of notes seemed modest and sculpted when he was with John Coltrane. Once on his own, his playing exhibited an unleashed fury.
Tyner's playing displays a modal similarity throughout FOCAL POINT; the propelling dynamic in these six compositions is the interplay between the pianist and drummer Eric Gravatt. Guilherme Franco plays congo drums, percussion, and tabla, lending an ethnic flair to the proceedings, while on horns are the formidable Gary Bartz, Ron Bridgewater, and Joe Ford. If you need a dose of that '70s power, this is your album.
