Forget the silly premise
This show was driven by a wonderfully realized relationship at its heart -- that between the long suffering Carlos Ramirez and his beloved Sister Bertrille. The Flying Nun was one of two shows I made a habit of, so to speak, when I was a little girl. Their relationship is why. The writing in the first season is sometimes very hackneyed and predictable, the storylines are straight out of cut-and-paste 60s comedy, but the performances are wonderfully broad and resonant, with so much earnest sweetness it's impossible not to love each character. There is a lot of heart and humor in this series, which can be easily watched by the whole family. On a technical front, the DVD production quality is top flight -- the color is amazing -- the add-ons are great fun.
