Review created: 02/29/08

I decided to buy this book because I had the rest of this series and only this one item was missing from this series. I really enjoy the books and the story is in such a way that you want to buy the rest of series to see what is next and what happened to the characters of the book. The author is a great writer.

thanks

Flowers in the Attic
by Virginia Cleo Andrews
June 6, 1924- December 19, 1986

Published 1979

A controversial gothic fiction novel
(child abuse, incest, under age sex)

Flowers in the Attic(1979), was the first book in the Dollanganger Series, and was followed by Petals on the Wind (1980), If There Be Thorns (1981), Seeds of Yesterday (1984), Garden of Shadows (1986) (started by Andrews, finished by Andrew Neiderman)

Narration begins in Gladstone, Pennsylvania, but the novel is truly set in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The lives of the Dollanganger children;
12 year old Cathy, her older brother Chris, who is 14 years old, and the 5 year old twins, Cory and Carrie.

The novel is written in the first person, from Cathy's point of view.

It was adapted into a film of the same name in 1987, Directed by Jeffrey Bloom. Narrated by Clare Peck, and staring; Kristy Swanson as Cathy Dollanganger, Jeb Stuart Adams as Chris Dollanganger, Ben Ryan Ganger as Cory Dollanganger, Lindsay Parker as Carrie Dollanganger, Marshall Colt as Father Christopher, Louise Fletcher as the Grandmother(Olivia Foxworth), Victoria Tennant as the Mother(Corrine Dollanganger), Nathan Davis as Grandfather Foxworth, and Virginia C. Andrews as window washing Maid (uncredited)

After her death in 1986, horror author Andrew Niederman was hired to continue writing books under the V.C. Andrews name. She had left outlines for a handful of books, but all the work was Niederman's.

The Dollanganger series
Andrews's first series of novels focuses on the lives of the Dollanganger family and was published between 1979 and 1986.

The first two novels, "Flowers in the Attic" and "Petals on the Wind" are focused on the Dollanganger children; Chris, Cathy, Cory, and Carrie. "Petals on the Wind" picking up the story right where "Flowers" leaves off. "If There Be Thorns" and "Seeds of Yesterday" continue to tell the story of the siblings, but changing focus to Cathy's children, Jory and Bart. "Garden of Shadows" is a prequel telling the tale of the grandparents, Olivia and Malcolm Foxworth.

s'good.
