The Gena Rowlands Band returns with another round of dramatic, swirling chamber pop that has all the class and catharsis of the woman after which it's named. Frontman and creative axis Bob Massey has a vocal delivery that falls somewhere between Steve Malkmus and Scott Walker, while he lyrically embraces the hard-hitting style of punk poets like Richard Hell and Jim Carroll. FLESH AND SPIRITS--the band's third full-length--finds Massey's droll humor in full supply on tracks like "F---ups of the World Unite" and "The Joke I Play on Washington" all underscored with tasteful string arrangements and buoyant harmonies.
