In 1969, Fleetwood Mac was the cream of British blues-rock bands. Led by guitarist Peter Green, the band's three-guitar front-line also included slide guru Jeremy Spencer and rhythm specialist Danny Kirwan. After a January 1969 gig opening for Muddy Waters, the Mac went to the legendary Chess studios to cut an album with local talent. The result was a two-record set in which the band plays in different combinations alongside such legends as Buddy Guy, Otis Spann, Honeyboy Edwards and Shakey Horton. House bandleader and bass player Willie Dixon leads the group through such numbers as Otis Rush's "Homework" and Howlin' Wolf's "Sugar Mama." A mini-set of Elmore James tunes that includes "Madison Blues" and "I'm Worried" gives Spencer plenty of room to display some stellar slide work in paying tribute to his idol. As for Green, his precise guitar playing and soulful singing shine on an ominous-sounding take of Little Walter's "Last Night" and the self-penned shuffle "Watch Out." Included on this reissue are a pair of pre-Fleetwood Mac blues numbers: Green's "Drifting" and the instrumental "Fleetwood Mac." Both were 1967 sessions resulting from studio time given to Green as a birthday gift from then-employer John Mayall.
