Flash Gordon is a Cult Classic

I disagree with aengaba!!! I remeber seeing this film as a kid and was awe-strucken. Back in 1980 this was great. Although Sam Jones wasn't the best actor I believed he pulled off Flash Gordon really well... and Max Von Sydow forget about it he was awesome as Ming the Merciless. Although the effects are sometimes cheesey and the dialog gets a little zany, I love to sit and watch this movie at least a couple times a year. The soundtrack... queen absolutely tremendous!!! My favorite part is when the Hawkmen are about to attack Ajax and the music builds up to the final charge... ooohh gives me goose bumps. The soundtrack really put this movie over the top... I'm giving it a 5 out of 5!!! Go see Superman Returns

Love this movie! Had it on VHS and searched for it on DVD. EBay was the only place I found it but it was $75 and up. Couldn't bring myself to pay that much. Then, lo and behold, there it was for $25. Made my day!

If you are a cult sci-fi fan, this is one you have to own! It's definitely filmed on a tight budget, but is pulled off nicely. And hey, the music by Queen makes it worth the purchase.

Clytus I'm Bored. What plaything can you offer me today

If you recognize that line, chances are you've already slavishly addicted to this vibrant and campy classic. Loosely based on the classic 1930's serial by Alex Raymond, this decadent over-the-top feature-length film extravaganza still delivers the goods as well today as it did back in 1980.

A great All-American storyline? Of course! Where else can the brawny blonde star quarterback for the New York Jets rocket off into space with, and gutsy travel agent, and The Fiddler on the Roof? Only in America! They land to battle the evil Emperor Ming (played flawlessly by Max Von Sydow with a well-held balance between seductive tyranny and bumbling humor).

And Flash gets a crack at two women in the film? Yeah, I think you guys out there would enjoy that, particularly the fact that Ornella Muti, who plays Princess Aura (who also gets a crack at a more than one guy in the film) seems to wear skimpier and skimpier clothing as the story progresses...it almost seems like she's wearing less fabric and more jewels...but I think Brian Blessed steals the day as the hulky and charming Prince Vultan who delivers some of the film's better one liners.

Costumes and sets are absolutely breathtakingly intricate, shiny, and coated with sequins, metalwork, jewelwork, and beading. Dino de Laurentiis clearly spared no expense in the decadent sets that make this rich and sexy space-pageant an ocular treat for those weary of the earthy and dirty, "real-world" space flicks.

Oh, and last but definitely not least is that classic signature Queen sound that tops the visual intensity with a electronic guitar symphony of pure BRIE CHEEZINESS. It no wonder this cult classic never leaves me bored. It's one of the best playthings out there to add to your collection.

  The way of Ming!
Review created: 05/07/08

I saw this movie when I was a kid in 1981 at the theater. I remember it taking me on a great adventure. So I bought on DVD, hoping it would hold up over time. And as we all know movies are just like wine. Some get better with age some turn to crappy vinegar. This version of Flash Gordon keeps its flavor. The colors in the scene's are spectacular. The story does not drag it keeps moving. One or two of the actors aren't what you call great. But it does have some actors who hold the film up. Max Von Sydow plays "Ming the Merciless" This is a shakspearin actor. Most might remember him from "The Minority Report" as the bad DA. He captures Mings true evil. Timithy Dalton also plays a part as a prince in Mings Kingdom. He also does a perfect job. In fact the main problem with this film is that these two out act the other actors by a mile. Of course the director does what he can with the budget he was given. If you watch this movie pay special attention to Ming as he's taking to the professor before has his mind erased. This is the true Ming! EVIL yet subtle.

I really wanted to original DVD version, not the newer one w/ the different cover art... so I was very pleased to find this one available and in great (like new) condition. Seller was prompt and flexible.
Thanks!

Flash Gordon sucked. The actor who played Flash Gordon is handsome, sweet, and has a strong presence. I like him. I liked everyone. But for all the color and sparkle, and the cool looking costumes, I couldn't take my eyes and mind off of Ming's daughter's butt.
