A ragtime jazz lover's dream!

This is one of my favorite movies and one of Danny Kaye's best performances as Loring (Red) Nichols. It is base on the true story of Mr. Nichols life and popularity in the '20's and '30's music era. The songs (many of them written by Kaye's wife, Sylvia Fine) is delightful and heartwarming. Appearances by Louis Armstrong add so much to story and his character is as lovable on film as he was in real life. Barbara Bel Geddes seems almost unchanged from her "Dallas" days as the Ewing family matriarch and gives a touching performance portraying Nichol's wife.
I highly recommend "The Five Pennies" to anyone who loves tight, harmonizing vocals, ragtime jazz and or just a "feel good" movie. It is well worth the money and a film you will enjoy again and again.
