Newly appointed Justice Ruth Loomis' (Jill Clayburgh) staunch conservative views stand in sharp opposition to the other members of the Court--especially those of outspoken liberal Justice Dan Snow (Walter Matthau). So it isn't long before the rivals square off against each other in a series of cases involving censorship and big business, igniting an intense ideological showdown that yields an unexpected truce between the fiery opponents.
