Progressive alt-rockers Shudder To Think play with the public perception of their music with this diverse soundtrack recording. On this innovative project, the band wrote and performed all the songs with the help of a different guest vocalist on each. Throughout the album, their stylistic experimentation is a far cry from the sound the band is known for. On "I Want Someone Badly," they utilize the late Jeff Buckley's soul influences in the service of a classic-sounding Stax-style tune, complete with horn section. Smashing Pumpkin Billy Corgan takes part in a tongue-in-cheek '50s-sounding ballad complete with spoken word section.
On the Liz Phair-fronted "Erecting a Movie Star," the signature riff from Springsteen's "Fire" is married to Bowie-ish piano riffs. Cheap Trick's Robin Zander lends a hand on the lush power pop of "Automatic Soup" and X leader John Doe pitches in on the Johnny Cash-style country tune "Speed Of Love." For those who thought they had Shudder To Think all figured out, this agreeably eclectic soundtrack will be a pleasant surprise.
