The First Days of School by Harry K. Wong, Rosemary T. Wong (1997, Paperback, Revised)

This is an outstanding book, a must for all educators. The book is very easy to read and understand. You will be able to implement many of the ideas immediately. A must read for every "new" teacher and a fantastic resource for the seasoned teacher. If you want your year to be successful, implement the procedures and classroom management suggestions. A few days of procedures and expectations will prepare you for a successful year. The book follows along perfectly with the video series. During my interview, I was asked how would I spend my first few days of school I mentioned this book and some of the procedures. All 8 principals on the panel were familiar with the book and pleased to hear my plans as a result of reading the book.

If you are thinking about purchasing this book in the middle of a school year, go ahead; with children you get a brand new start each day. You will benefit from the information contained and the testimonials featured throughout the book. Read, think, learn and begin using some tried and true procedures, ideas and information.

Harry Wong is my hero! Having acquired "the class from ****", I have seen such a turnaround in behavior and academic performance in our ESE class. Our students are comfortable, confident, and creative -- because we have enabled them with organization and information readily at hand. They understand what's expected of them, and what they can expect from us; this empowers them to spend their time learning rather than acting out.

Too bad this book isn't required coursework for EVERY education major. What a huge difference we'd see in our student achievement scores. And -- retaining excellent teachers would not be a problem for school districts nationwide.

I'm planning to give several copies of the book as Christmas or graduation gifts to friends and family. Maybe you should consider it, too.

Wong writes what the title says. His book is good if you have no real knowledge of todays youth. He gets you ready for the above average and average classroom. You will be laughed out of the school using this in most struggling learners class. Worth buying if you only have book knowledge of youth.

This book is like a bible or the classroom, every teacher should have one. My education class required me to buy this book and I thought it would be another booring book but it isn't. It is easy to read and use, the authors knows their stuff. Buy it and keep it, I promise you will want to tell all new teachers about this book.

I THINK THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS YOU CAN HAVE AS A FIRST YEAR TEACHER. WHEN I WAS A FIRST YEAR TEACHER THIS BOOK WAS ONE OF THE BEST RESOURCES ANYONE COULD HAVE. IT COVERS A VARIETY OF TOPICS SUCH AS: WHAT TO DO ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL , DISCIPLINE TECHNIQUES, CLEAR AND CONCISE OBJECTIVE WORDS TO USE IN WRITING LESSON PLANS AND THE BOOK ALSO GIVES AN EXPLANATION OF THE OBJECTIVE WORDS. NOW THAT I SUPERVISE STUDENT TEACHERS I BUY EACH ONE OF THEM A COPY AS A GIFT AT THE END OF THEIR STUDENT TEACHING. THE EXPRESSIONS ON THEIR FACE AND THE COMMENT THAT EACH ONE MAKES CONCERNING THE BOOK LET ME KNOW THAT I HAVE GIVEN THEM A NICE GIFT AND A VALUABLE TOOL ALL WRAPPED UP IN ONE!

This is a fantastic book for anyone venturing into teaching! I am energized to enter the classroom and feel prepared with some great tools to help me become an effective, efficient and successful teacher from day one! A peer recommended this book to me, and I can't imagine entering this coming school year without it! A must have!

This is an excellent book for any new teacher. I am student teaching this semester and Harry Wong tells you how to set up a classroom with rules and procedures that will make it run smoothly so that learning can occur.

I never got it. I paid for this book 2 months ago and have still never received it. I needed this book for a course I was taking. Well, the course is over- I still need the book that i already paid for.

This book is clearly organized, easy to read (you can read it easily in an afternoon) and is packed with extremely useful tips. I provide district-level support to new teachers and veteran teachers experiencing difficulty in classroom manangement. Harry Wong is extremely credible in his suggestions, especially those focusing on routines and procedures. New teachers in our district (one of largest in the nation) get a copy of this book at New Teacher Orientation. My favorite tip of his is this: stand at your door in the morning, and greet each and every student by name, every day. Try this and see what happens!

An added bonus is that Mr. Wong has a great sense of humor!

The first time I heard about the Wong's was in a classroom management class. Their theory can stand alone for first year teachers, for teachers who have been in the classroom for 25 years and need a fresh perspective, or for teachers who simply want to run their classroom effectively. If you want a guidebook to implementing procedures and getting your classroom started off in the right directing, you must buy this book!

This book is amazing ~ it has so much information, yet is not overwhelming for a first year teacher. This was the best tool I had for my first year.
I actually used it for my first few years and still occasionally referenced it as I became a "seasoned" teacher.
There is information on things that a new teacher may not even think about.
Mine was filled with post-it notes!!

this book is a must for beginning teachers. it gives concrete ideas and strategies for classroom management, which is refreshing since much of our training seems to deal with theory and content. i don't always agree with everything mr. wong says, but he provides awesome information. he claims "the first days of school set the tone for the rest of the school year" and he couldn't be more correct. i'm a fan.

This book is written by professionals out in the field that share their experiences and other situations that educators come across, along with tips and recommendations for readers.

I really enjoyed this book. I think it is a must have for all future educators. I was actually purchasing this book for a book report I had to write in one of my college courses on classroom management. It seemed like every single one of my teachers were referencing it in some way. It is an easy read and full on information. It is priceless as a reference and something to check during a teaching experience. My father is a principal and says that most teachers are presented with this book during their first orientation into a new school system. My father has the first and second edition in his professional library and has been marking it up and highlighting it every since he received it many years ago. It is just that valuable!!!!!

This book is a wonderful addition to any new teachers library. There are an abundance of useful teaching tools and offers of encouragement to make the beginning of school easier for not just the new teacher, but the seasoned teacher as well.

This book helps the first year teacher prepare for his or her first year. It gives you some guidelines to help you get ready for your first days. Being a student teacher, I could not afford to pay $30 for a brand new copy so I was excited to find it on half.com.

I have enjoyed the book and most of all the price. What I did not like was that it took quite a bit of time to arrive. I don't know if that was because of the Postal service or what. I have used and will continue to use the site.\
