I have owned my copy of Final Fantasy XII (Import Version), for some time now. The game in itslef, to me , is yet another great masterpiece by the geniuses at Square-Enix. Below I have rated the game in a few different categories, that will hopefully be helpful in the decision of whether or not to purchase the American version when it hits shelves on October 31st. 2006.

Graphics: 9.8 - 10 Final Fantasy fans have watched their game series become more and more realistic over the years, from FFVII, to FFX. FFXII however, has reached the pinnacle of the PS2 console and will likely satisfy many FF fans.

Storyline: 10 - 10 Is there really any denying the fact that every FF game has a wonderful storyline?

Gameplay: 7.5 - 10 Why did I give this category such a low rating? You may ask.
the answer is that 87% of gamers may feel a bit overwhelmed with the new battle system, and the new skill system, it can be a bit confusing your first time through.

Cinematics: 10 - 10 As always, the behemoth that is Square-Enix has some real top notch pros working for them in the Cinematics Dept.

Character Involvement/Development: 9.6 - 10 What's gonna happen next? Oh no! Penelo don't listen! Seriously though... Very few games outside the FF series have such engrossing characters.

Replay Value: 10 - 10 You just can't stop! Really, I mean there are so many things to do in the world of FFXII, and a few Character references that even FF Veterans may not catch the first time through.

Well, I hope this review has been helpful to someone out there!

I have played almost ten hours now and I cannot say that I am disappointed. By Final Fantasy standards this is an admittedly harder game, yet it is still fun!

First off the battle system is very refreshing. You can see all of the monsters in front of you and choose to fight or sneak around them. Often you must strategize which to attack because if you are not careful they will double team and triple team and so forth on you all at once. The Gambit system also advances gameplay. It consists of automatic commands you can set for your character, such as 'attack nearest foe' or heal when someone's Health Points are 70% below maximum. This way you can sit back and relax while your characters take care of the less important monsters. It is entirely up to the gamer to decide whether to turn the Gambits on or off. Also in battle you can switch your character for another at generally any time, even if they are knocked out! A great and wonderful aspect when you're fighting difficult monsters.

Speaking of difficulty, you can engage in Mob Hunts, which are side quests to defeat extremely hard and challenging monsters. Never before have I encountered such difficulties as these...but it makes the game all more fun.

I can't say much about the characters so far. Vaan, the main character, seems very typical, yet the others have interesting back stories. The story resembles the older Final Fantasy games in a way, very dark and power hungry. Ashe is different than I would have thought her to be; she isn't the typical FF girl character.

Gil, the currency, is very difficult to come by, unfortunately. Monsters will occasionally drop items that you can sell, yet theses rarely yield anything of value. Not to mention that the game gives you the option of buying so many things in the beginning of the game that you find yourself stuck between better armor, a better weapon, or just regular supplies.

Treasure chests are now random, which irk some, but they always reappear, so in that respect, I feel that it is better that way to gain lots of treasure. :)

The graphics are as best as the PS2 can handle, and they look wonderful! All of the areas in the game have their own specific feel and you can tell the designers spent a lot of time on each one.

Overall this game is definately worth it, as you will spend hours and hours playing it, enjoying the gameplay. The creators put a lot of time and effort and it completely shows. Don't miss out on this classic!

  A HEROIC EFFORT, BUT...

As a veteran player of every Final Fantasy game ever released, I looked forward to this version with much anticipation. I have completed this latest installment and while I enjoyed the gamplay, there were more "cons" to this game than any other I've played in the FF series. To give credit where it's due, the graphics and technical aspects were unmatched. However, that to me was cancelled out by a lack of strong characters and storyline.

Pros
- The graphics here are better than ever. The cut scenes are absolutely breathtaking, vivid, detailed and intricate. Technically, FFXII is unmatched and will absolutely captivate you.

- I found the battle system (which changes after every new FF installment) to be a refreshing improvement. There's no intro and exit scene for every battle, bless them, only with major bosses, which makes the game flow much faster and makes it more realistic. You can pick and choose your fights for the most part, flee your foes, and can spot enemies lurking through the mighty helpful "map screen" shown through most of the game.

- The various party and character command sections, (party, licenses, equip, status ,etc. ) are more streamlined and less time consuming than previous games, giving you more time to enjoy the game and less trying to figure out the best sword to use.

CONS

- There is no gil (money) for winning battles, only items which you can exchange for money. There is NEVER enough money to buy what you want until the very end.

- The Esper component is not as enjoyable as past games. Summoning an Esper uses up all your magic, which is a total flop, and you dont' have anywhere near as much control over the Esper's actions as past games. The Mist Knack chain sequences take some getting used to, are poorly explained, and again, use up all your magic.

- Character and storyline are just as not as well developed as in previous games and are downright dismal when compared with, say, Final Fantasy X (with the exception of the charming and amusing Balthier.) There's no real sense of comraderie or bonding, the storyline needs some work, and the characters are rather bland. Vaan is the wimpiest "hero" to date of all FF games, no? The Princess did not inspire any loyalty on my part (was truthfully mildly annoying), I still dont' know what Penelo was doing there, and the only thing Fran had going for her was her nearly bare bum.

- Game is a little TOO easy; and it's nearly impossible to die. Takes away some of the thrill.

All in all, a good game for those thrilled with the technical aspects and not so much for those who have enjoyed past FF's outstanding and unmatched character and story development. This game has some decent bosses and marks that really challenge your survival abilities, some decent side quests, hunts, and espers including whole game areas that are strictly bonuses. I just hope that future games will bring back the character magic and memorable storylines of past installments.

Final Fantasy XII *Clear Your Schedule for the Month*

Graphics
9/10
Square has always been up-to-date with graphics. This is true in the case of Final Fantasy XII; realistic characters, wonderful animation and tip-top environments lie on your path. Encounter deserts, forests, jungles and dungeons. The lip synch quality however, has slightly decreased, but that doesn't remove the game of its great animation and graphics engine. We have a distinct set of foes: wolves, dinosaurs, cacti, tomatoes, fireballs and hissing cobras. The characters are also distinct from each other, and some resemble characters from previous Final Fantasies. But come on, with all of those millions of game characters Square's made, they really don't have a choice.

Story
8/10
This FF circles around war and conquest. It takes place in the land of Ivalice. In the opening, we'll see a cutscene involving the events of a great war. After that, we'll be in control of Reks, who you'll be playing as for the first half-hour. More events unfold in the palace, and then we listen to the narrator talk for a while. Then, you'll finally gain control of the protagonist Vaan, a 17-year-old boy with dreams of someday getting an Airship of his own and becoming a sky pirate. The story will dig deeper, and you'll meet a cast of characters like Penelo, Migelo, Ashe, and more. The story will make you more eager to see what happens next, and you'll be on the edge of your seat, until you fall off.

Gameplay
9/10
This time, the gameplay is much more than what it used to be. It combines real-time with turn-based. Sort of. You have to move around until you have the chance to attack, then press X to bring up the battle menu and choose how you wish to attack. Your party members will support you, and you can actually control them by taking them as the leader! There are magic techs as usual, like the shocking Thunder spell, the helpful Cure, and the frosty Blizzard. You have to use LP to unlock new moves and abilities this time. You also have the ability to choose if you want someone with great defense, a mage to work his/ her magic, or a heavy armed warrior. The game system is quite complicated and takes some getting used to, but if you can learn it, you'll enjoy it the way you enjoy all the other Final Fantasies.

Playtime/ Replayability
8/10
The game lasts for long, similar to other Final Fantasies, and is also more difficult in my opinion. That, of course, adds to the playtime. As for the replayability, I can't really say anything. The game may be so long that one playthrough will be enough to entertain you. On the other hand, you may want to go through it again for increasing your fun. Well, it depends really.

Should I Buy It?
Final Fantasy XII is an awesome game to add to your PlayStation 2 collection, but don't start counting your gil if you'd rather prefer the good old-fashioned (yet fun) turn-based system. If that's the case, rent it, try it out. I'd recommend trying out the game to all genre fans, it's quite entertaining and helps to pass the time. It's also gotten a decent story; you're bound to enjoy this game! Well, at least in my opinion.

Final Fantasy XII... a great feeling.

Final Fantasy XII comes out with many positive things which makes everyone loves this game more. Whether it be the new battle system, the new license system (similiar to the FFX Sphere Grid system), or just plainly the beautiful graphics makes us gamers wanting more.

Summary : Basically, this game has many things to attract players. Stunningly beautiful graphics, a new "license system grid", or just plainly watching your party automatically attack the huge monster on the screen. This game has a battle system similiar to the one on FFXI. NO MORE RANDOM BATTLES! Enemies appear on the screen and you fight them as you see them like a MMORPG. FFXII gives you sort of a feel like you're in a MMORPG... which is a pretty good feeling I might say...

Gameplay : Battle System like FFXI where you run up to enemies and do your battle. You fight on screen and can move around when fighting like FFXI. Your party can be controlled by "gambits" which are commands that you want to do in every fight. You can always control them manually if you want the feel of controlling every character in battle.

Sound : Excellent music. A beautiful soundtrack. The music hits the spot in almost every part of the game whether it be the battle music or the world map tune. It makes you feel like you're in the game and the music is greatly composed.

Overall : Overall, this game is excellent and a must get! Final Fantasy XII just brings out a lot and it packs a punch. This game is great and addictive. It makes you want to not stop playing. Cant stop, wont stop!

"The Fantasy Continues..."
The Final Fantasy saga continues with this latest installment in the already historic library of Final Fantasy games, Final Fantasy XII is a must have for not just Final Fantasy fans, but all gamers who love intense RPGs.

Gameplay: 9/10
Square-Enix has replaced the usual turn-based Final Fantasy fights with battles in real time. Instead of having to take turns to fight, your party can attack on their own based on your strategy. Now, why, you may ask, did I give the gameplay a 9/10 if it sounds so great? Simply put, the battles may be in real time, but its not the kind of fighting like in Square's Kingdom Hearts series. You have to wait for an action bar to load for any action to take place. Still, this allows Square's Final Fantasy series to still retain a portion of its well-known RPG battles. As for the quests, bosses, and areas, they're all great! There are many bosses you can encounter throughout the game (and not just in the storyline). You can go on dozens of quests that allow you to do things from delivering letters to killing evil monsters. The maps are great and allow a wide area of space for you to explore. Of course, I can't forget to mention summonings. Throughout the game, you can obtain up to 13 espers to help you in battles. In addition to espers, you can use special mist techniques (called quickenings) to deal serious damage to your enemies. All in all, the gameplay in FFXII is better than ever.

Story: 10/10
The story is better than ever. While I don't want to spoil any plot points for you (if you haven't bought the game yet and are considering it), I can at least tell you that once again you'll encounter a Princess, some vagabonds, and a few good-looking women along the way (even if some of them have bunny ears).

Graphics: 10/10
I gave a 10/10 because for the PS2, these graphics are amazing! Unlike in normal Square games where they have the best quality cut-scenes in the opening and ending scenes, Square has placed several high-quality cut-scenes throughout the game. Even without these high-quality scenes, the graphics look great.

Sound: 10/10
The sound system is also great. The songs throughout the game are perfect for each area and each boss and it really makes you feel what kind of environment you're in. The battle sounds are good too and aren't over exaggerated, making the gameplay seem much more realistic.

Overall: 10/10
Final Fantasy XII was a great game and is the kind of RPG that you can play over and over again and not grow tired of it. Truly a welcome addition to Square's already astounding Final Fantasy saga. It makes me all the more anxious for Final Fantasy XIII!!

Reviewer's Score: 10/10

Ok lets start off with this is a final fantasy game..... I have always held final fantasy games to a higher caliber then most other RPG's but this one really let me down. its a total change from the past final fantasy games.... true it has some features you will know and even expect but combat system sucks, "magicks" are just plain odd and a little cheesy. not to mention the oddly placed vocal and non vocal scenes and the even more unnecessary cinematic for just stupid non important moments. this is truly the worse final fantasy I have played in a long time. if your a final fantasy fan its worth your money but a lot of fans of the games are going to be disappointed by it. me and my wife both dislike it as do my brothers and a couple of my friends who have played. this game reminds me more of final fantasy XI with a similar Combat system and a leveling system like that of final fantasy X. 4/10

Another classic title by Square Enix

Are you surprised that Square Enix made another godly title? Well, I am not.

In depth review of the game:

Gameplay: 9.8
Square Enix introduces to us a new system of gambits, license board, full camera control, and real time turn based combat. Boss fights are so fun, not to mention that the A.I. is pretty damn good if you have your gambit set up correctly. Oh for me personally, big fights last for about 5-10 minutes and during that time, you have to think quickly and act quickly. Unbelievable gameplay overall.

Graphics: 10
Final Fantasy XII is a game that has the best graphics I have seen for this system to date. That is no exaggeration. PSX 2 has reach its limitation with this title and we can only expect more from Square Enix. I wonder how FF X III will look like on Ps3? I cant wait. There is no load time, no slow down, and CGI movies are unbelievably awesome. Oh yea, after playing the game, I have to watch watch FF 7 Advent Child again just to bring back memories :)

Sound: 9.8
Just like every other Final Fantasy game, the music fits the game very well. ALthough for me personally, I still think Final Fantasy 7 has the best musical soundtrack. I would still put it up there in ranking with all the other final fantasy soundtrack though.

Concept: 10/10
Woaw, the real time combat blew me away. I though final fantasy 10 turn based real time combat was good, but this one is totally out of the box. Square Enix threw out the turn based static real time turnbase combat to a more real time, being able to move around, time based turned combat. To simplify what i said earlier, you literally could equip a gun, shoot, run around and wait till the charger is full again and then shoot again and never ever take a single damage!
One word, awe inspiring.

Overall: 9.8/10

A classic game that ever RPG gamer should get. Its a no brainer to pick up. If you love RPG game with a great story, awesome graphics, wonderful soundtrack, and a revolutionary combat system, this is the game to pick up. THis is probably the last great game for the ps2. We can only hope for better games that come out for the ps3. Can you image FF XIII in dual layer blue ray disc ?( 50 gig storage). Well, i cant, and I am pretty sure i will spend many hours again playing that game as I already did with Final Fantasy XII

Game of the Year, don't miss out!

This is one game you do not want to pass up, whether you're a Final Fantasy fan or not! Buy it now or buy it when it's $20 but buy it! Final Fantasy is always outdoing themselves and it certainly shows.

Not only does this game have a great array of characters and very well-thought out storyline, but it also takes RPGs to an entirely new level with a revamped battle system. If you have the extra $20, buy the Limited Edition game and guide, but in the end, all that matters is that you have it in your hands.

If I could explain the level of quality this game was in one simple paragraph, it would not be worth the money!

I believe that this is an excellent FF game. I have yet to play one that I did not like. However I did like some more then others. I think that 12 may be my favorite so far. I have found that certain parts of it however, are quite difficult. It is a bit frustrating, but it is relieving at the same time, as FF 8-10 were all pretty easy games to beat, and I am glad that they put a bit more challenge in 12.

As for the battle system. I have decided that I like it. It keeps the aspects I liked from the traditional battle system but adds a lot more freedom to the mix. However if you are someone who liked to run from all the random battles in the other games, you will find that quite a bit harder in 12.

So far I am finding the storyline to be quite good. I have not decided if it is as good as 7's though. 7 being my all time favorite FF storyline.

Overall I gave FF12 a 5/5.

Final Fantasy 12 includes near full voice acting and an action style battle system not seen in the Final Fantasy series before. The graphics in this game are beyond phenomenal, so much so that I had a crush on one of the characters, Balthier the Sky Pirate!

The License system to learn skills is quite simple and easy to customize your characters exactly the way you want them!

Overall, Final Fantasy 12 is astounding and I would recommend it to absolutely anyone, even people who don't normally like RPG's.

  Great!!!!! Final Fantasy XII Review
Review created: 11/18/06
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

's been a long time since the last proper installment in the standard-setting Final Fantasy series. While Square Enix did ship numerous games bearing the Final Fantasy brand after 2001's Final Fantasy X, it took all these years before another lengthy, ambitious, lavishly produced, traditional role-playing game would arrive. Final Fantasy XII arrives at the end of the PlayStation 2's lifecycle, whereas Final Fantasy X benefited from a presentation that was truly cutting edge. This latest installment in the series also introduces a new strategic combat system that makes gameplay more cohesive yet more hands-off than before. In spite of this trade-off, it's an evolutionary step for the series and a refreshing change. And underneath the overhauled combat and the distinctive visual style, this is still Final Fantasy. Outstanding art direction, a likable cast of characters, a lengthy quest, and plenty of challenging battles all await you in this next installment to live up to the Final Fantasy name.
Unlike most previous Final Fantasy games, this latest game takes place in a particular fantasy setting that's already been established by some of its predecessors. Final Fantasy XII's world of Ivalice, first seen in 1998's great Final Fantasy Tactics and later again in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, is like a Japanese take on Star Wars' galaxy far, far away. Men and women walk the streets of Ivalice's impressive cities together with hulking, lizardlike creatures and other strange beings, and political unrest and war threaten their livelihoods as a resistance movement mounts to overthrow an empire that's taken over much of the land. Ivalice is more fantasy than science fiction, yet the air battles featured in the game's opening cutscene, and the decidedly high-tech airships that figure prominently throughout the rest of the game, give this Final Fantasy its token sci-fi flair. The story follows a cast of characters who set out to free the country of Dalmasca from the clutches of the Archadian Empire, which took it over by force. During the journey, you'll learn much more about the history of Ivalice, the strange forces at play behind the scenes, and, of course, about your characters.

The ragtag group of characters you'll be guiding throughout most of the game are as unlikely a lot as you've probably come to expect from a Final Fantasy game. Vaan is the token androgynous male lead, sort of an Aladdin-type with a good-natured personality and strong instincts. He might look a bit like a girl, but he's your typical good guy. His childhood friend, Penelo, somehow gets swept up into everything along with him, and soon enough Vaan also runs into a smooth-talking sky pirate named Balthier and his stern-but-stunning companion, a rabbit-eared woman named Fran. A strong-willed princess and a disgraced captain of Dalmasca's defeated military round out the main cast, though they'll be joined by other companions at various times throughout the game. Much like the cast, the story itself is similar to previous Final Fantasy games in a lot of ways, resulting in many implausible but exciting sequences and some dramatic, emotionally charged moments later on. It's a very good story overall, especially once the Empire's true intentions become clearer and the real villains are unmasked. The plot unfolds through lots of beautifully produced and expressive cinematic cutscenes and plenty of well-written dialogue. In between all this, expect a lot of combat, exploration, a

From the looks of it, FF12 seems extremely promising for both loyal fans of the series and any newcomers. Square Enix continues to push the limits of graphics and sound, even in this bite-sized demo. Awesome! Can't wait for the full version to be released. Worth EVERY penny.

  Level-up Flaw Ruins Game.

I'm a player of Final Fantasy, and I was disappointed by 12. I chose "below average" because this game does not meet the standard that 10 set. It's a rehash of 11 with a poorly thought-out level-up system. It's also a very easy game. Because of these reasons, the game is not worth playing unless you're a fan. As a non-FF game, I'd rate it a 4, but as an FF game, I only can give it a 2. Allow me to go into detail about the poor level-up system.

The game allows characters to progress in three different ways. On the Licence Board, you use "LP" (license points) to "buy" licenses to use things. The board is split into two parts. The top half is abilities, spells, and accessories. The bottom half is equipment. The third way you level is by gaining actual levels through EXP. Standard operating procedure here. Just looking at it so far, it sounds like a great, unique system that will allow for unique characters. Of course, this isn't the case.

The problem is not the system itself. It is the correlation between LP gained and Gil (FF term for money) gained that makes this system not work. We also have to factor that the characters themselves are oriented towards certain FF job archetypes. Fran (the bunny wonder woman), for example, will be best suited as a mage. So why try to make her anything but? I digress. Let me get back to why the GIL/LP relationship hurts the system.

You see, the game gives you copious LP. So much that it is very simple to in fact buy the entire board early. Secondly, the game limits your Gil influx provided you do not go "farming." (Farming is a 11 term used to refer to killing monsters for the sole purpose of gaining gil. Remember, 12 is a Lot like 11.) You have to buy Job abilities and Spells Before you can use the spell. Also, once you buy a spell or job ability, anyone who has the LP unlocked can use that spell. Let me make this clearer.

If I buy a spell with my limited money. I then am able to use my copious LP to buy that spell with every character. So, if it makes logical sense to buy the same thing (thus getting more mileage from my gil), I will be making the same character each time. Each character will be the same character with maybe a few Minor differences.

So, this system that was to make unique characters does the opposite. It makes very much the Same characters. It could have been easily fixed, too. Give less LP, and give more Gil. That would have fixed it. Instead they have it ass backwards. I know I haven't discussed the entire game, but I wanted to highlight my primary problem.

I feel I did that. 12 is a weak game because of a major design flaw in addition to other minor flaws. As an FF game, this is inexcusable. They should be held to a higher standard, so I am. I thank you for reading.

Have a good day,

Matt

  Best I've played in years

FF XII is a fantastic game as the latest in the ongoing saga of the series. Great role playing action as you do have so solve some (not overly challenging) riddles with clues and leads from Characters in the game as well as NPCs. The battles are exciting with real time action and some good power attacks that you can gain throughout the game. I'm 44 hours in now and still have a LONG way to go to the end so you get good gameplay for your buck. Highly recommended.

FF XII - The Greatest Fantasy Of All
Review created: 02/23/07

This is one of the best FF in the current market. This game is long, somthing like 60 hours of gameplay if you are rushing through and 100 hours if you go for every side quest, all the differnt marks, and not to metion the astounding graphics for a PS2 game is amazing.Overall I think there is only a few hard to find problems with this game, first off, the license board which at first makes the player think he can customize each charater, but in reality most of the characters will end up the same, and only other main problem with this game is that for a Quickening (special move) it takes up all your mana which in the beggining of the game this is not a problem later on it will prove a problem when your party's mana increases.
If you are thinking about buying this game, its better you just do it you won't be sorry.

Absolutely love it! Get the Collector's Edition!

I love practically everything about this game and all FF vets would probably agree, as well.

First off, the nostalgic things. **Beware of some spoiler stuff** Obviously FF has a long history with airships. This generation's are only even better. If you guys remember FFIII/VI, there was a boss you could encounter while flying around in Darryl's Airship: Doomgaze. Well in FFXII, you can also encounter a boss with your airship. heheh... The game intro and boss ending music also sound familiar.

Next, graphics. Extremely detailed and beautiful.

I really like the new gameplay although yes newcomers would have to get used to it. The camera control is really great too (if you do it right, you can "pan" to close-ups of people) ;-)

Plenty of things to do and side stuff as well. I got the Collector's Edition the first day it came out and so far I've done 90+ hours...and that's not including alot of the side quests, alot of levelling up, and even thinking I'm halfway!

Rent or buy? Buy-Buy-Buy! =)

UPDATE: 12/11/06: SPOILER: The ending wasn't quite as good as I expected. I was hoping for more of a romantic twist like in VIII, XI, and X. However, after watching the extras (esp. interviews of staff) on the Bonus DVD in the Collector's Edition, I developed a greater appreciation for why they choose to make it the way they did, whether or not I myself liked certain aspects.

Great Game! Final Fantasy Series does it AGAIN!!!
Review created: 11/20/06

I wasted 73 hours on this and still dont want to finish the GAME!! There is soo much to do in this game, whether its collecting all the Weapons or Espers, to fishing!! This game is packed with sub quest and mini maps, its ENDLESS. The storyline can be better though like the previous series, but im sure once I finish it, it should rank on top with the rest of them.

Definitely the new gameplay is FAR BETTER than the old series. Without those pauses going into battles really uptempos the gameplay. Free roaming battles introduces the new genre of FF series. Makes me totally forget the battle styles in the past.

Overall, excellent game if you are a RPG fan. GET A COPY TODAY!!!!!!!!
