The game that had it all and still stands on it's own!

So what is so special about this game? Why do people spend so much money on a now old game?
Well the answer lies in the title: Final Fantasy Tactics! A tactical Final Fantasy game that really works! As usual with FF games the graphics, music, gameplay and story is really really good.

One other thing is that this game is huge! To really clear everything you have at least 100 hours of fun gameplay.

Also the game is really easy and fast to get into. No long boring tutorials are needed here.

All in all this game had it all and still stands on it's own. ALL tactical games released afterwards have based their content and system on this one.

A must have!

  fantastic game

This game's story is so epic, that at times, it seems that the story was wasted on a game designed with a focus on battles, although at other times, the format of the game seems to suit the story perfectly, as when the characters speak during mid-battle. The plot of this game has the theme of "exploring history in search of truth," and demonstrates, through allegory, the biases of the societal forces which allow for the recording of history, and the tendency of historians to attribute heroic characteristics to the victors of any scenario, regardless of their true alignment, or intentions. At many points in the plot, unexpected events occur, with the attentive player having received just enough information to speculate on the motivations of the characters involved, and playing through the game, there were many such moments at which I speculated improbably twisted scenarios, only to be shocked when future events actually confirmed my dark suspicions, or clarified the scenario to be even more depraved than I had imagined. This is not an incredibly violent game, nor is it atmospherically dark, in the film noir sense. But it is a deeply philosophical game, which doesn't under-represent the magnitude of human suffering, the tendency of humans to abuse power, or the unreliability one's personal allies in societies conducive to individual scheming. The character of Delita, who comes across as contradictorily skeptical and idealistic, is too much of a master-moralist, in the Nietzschean sense, to qualify as a hero, but is too difficult for a player, sensitive towards his motivations, to villainize. Even the aberrant supernatural elements of this mostly human and political story work well from a literary standpoint, as the relationship between Ajora, the Lucavi, and those who seek the Zodiac stones is represented with style and subtlety, adding Faustian intrigue to the plot. The gameplay of Tactics is reasonably balanced, in the sense that there are not many situations in which one overly powerful and convenient approach to winning battles makes every other possible strategy obsolete. Like other job-system games, the player can create these situations himself, by over committing to the equipment and abilities for a particular job for certain characters, thereby forcing himself to use the same strategy for every battle, or sacrifice the majority of his characters' power, but the game itself offers many different feasible play possibilities. Different sections of the game will present different challenges depending on how the player's party is configured, such as Ramza's one-on-one battle with Gafgarion, the "outnumbered" battle at Golgorand execution site, or the rooftop "save Rafa" battle, and unless the player's party is so ridiculously overpowered as to allow for massively inefficient gameplay, the tactical parameters of each battle require a rethinking of the player's strategy, as elements such as attack strength, attack range, and character mobility must be alternately prioritized. The ability to review story scenes and look up public information about the characters adds to the immersive element of the game, and the player's ability to appreciate the plot. This game is superb because its many innovations are effectively implemented, its visual design effectively portrays compelling, medieval-style fantasy, some characters are incredibly well-developed to fully serve their role within the incredibly literary plot.

  The best of its kind

There weren't many strategy RPG games that were anywhere near as tolerable as Final Fantasy Tactics. FFT cleanly combines great strategy-based gameplay with a very deep character customization system. It was this game and FF5 that really popularized the job system concept. Aside from some translation and grammatical issues, this was a flawless game. It really feels like playing a much improved upon version of chess. With the vast number of jobs available throughout the game, there are virtually infinite combinations of party skills which makes for a wide variety of strategies. The difficulty is moderated very well with the enemies always remaining around your level. Some battles can seem impossible and getting on a bad missing streak can be annoying, but overall I consider Final Fantasy Tactics to be one of the better titles in the whole series and a wonderful game on its own. If you enjoy chess, you'll probably enjoy this game.

  Final Fantasy with a twist

Unlike all other Final Fantasy games, FF Tactics is a tactical turn-based battling game where you move your characters around the battlefield like a chessboard. There is no voice acting in this game and no cinematics except for the opening movie. The music in this game is decent but not as great as other titles in the series.

The job system to learn new abilities in the best put together job system I have ever encountered. With over 20 unlockable job classes, the customization opportunities are endless. Most definitely worth buying!

I had never played Final Fantasy until a couple of years ago and I am saddened that I had missed out on it until then! I owned a Super Nintendo when I was little but always played the Mario games and never tried these. I highly recommend you play it and own it but I will warn you it's very addicting!

Amazing, Beautiful, Captivatiing. A True Work of Art.

This game, in my opinion, is the best game ever made. It is so beautiful and thought provoking. With many RPG's, if you raise your level high enough no enemy presents a challenge. This game is different. It is very difficult to just breeze through an enemy encounter.
Final Fantasy Tactics is one title that everybody with a PSX, PS1, or PS2 should own. This game is the reason why we are gamers. No other game has come close to the wonder and excitement this game provides. Even its Gameboy Advance "sequel" was disappointing and lackluster in comparison--And Tactics Advance was a good, solid, and fun game.
This game was released when I was a junior in high school. Now 8 years later it is by far the best game I have ever played. I was always disappointed that Square never came out with a true sequel to this game. A sequel that is as dark, thought provoking, and beautiful as the original.
I currently am in an auction to get this game again. I foolishly sold it to a friend for 50 dollars during my freshman year of college. I truly cannot wait until it gets shipped to my house and I can explore the amazing world of Ivalice again with (and this is going to sound really cheesy) my old friends Ramza, Mustadio, Agrias, and the many other characters that you come to care for during the 100 hours it will take you to get everything this game has to offer.

This game was one of the most overlooked games when it first came out. A lot of Final Fantasy fans seemed to think that the break from tradition RPG battling was a travesty. I, however, always loved this addition to the Final Fantasy family. The difference in the battle system is part of what makes the game so much fun to play. The story line is good enough to capture the attention of the worst ADHD afflicted children. I purchased this new copy because my old copy was in such bad condition from so many years of use. I have played it again and again, and will play it many more times.

Final Fantasy Tactics is a one of a kind game. Its a very unique RPG with a deep story and also Epic battles. I enjoy this game and almost all of its awesome qualities, such as the customizability of your attack squad, there skills, jobs, and equipment. This game gives you total control over how you place your skills and such. I would say that only one who has the patience and intelligence to play strategy games, and the Love a great story for RPGs this game is a Must play!

One of the best Tactical RPGs ever made
Review created: 06/06/07

Final Fantasy Tactics was one of the first games in its genre to be released outside of Japan. True to its name, Final Fantasy Tactics contains a vivid story, and introduced players to the world of Ivalice, which became the setting for Final Fantasy Tactics Advance as well as Final Fantasy XII, and will be the setting for the next Final Fantasy Tactics game on the Nintendo DS.

Even years after its release, Final Fantasy Tactics is still one of the best Tactical RPG (TRPG) ever to be created. Being a fan of TRPGs, having played games from Nippon Ichi (Disgaea, Makai Kingdom), Suikoden Tactics, Tactics Ogre, and even the SNES Tenchi game, Final Fantasy Tactics still stands out as one of the best (if not the best) TRPG.

While the game shows its age compared to many modern games, it is still comparable to games seen on the Nintendo DS, as well as other TRPGs. This game arguably brought the genre to North America, and its popularity is still seen through the cost of such an old game, as well as the nil chance that it can be located in stores.

Final Fantasy Tactics, unlike many other TRPGs, incorporate a huge array of abilities in addition to character jobs, allowing for a multitude of viable strategies to fit many styles of play. The characters move within a grid, similar to most TRPGs. Buildings and height differences are incorporated as well, to allow the use of terrain to be factored in.

Difficulty-wise, the game is not so hard to stump the casual player, but can be complicated enough to be fun for more avid gamers as well. This quality is probably what makes Final Fantasy Tactics so enjoyable to so many people.

Bottom line is, if you're a fan of TRPGs, Final Fantasy Tactics is definately a game to play. However, even those who have never played TRPGs should definately give this game or its sequel(s) a try. Fans of real-time strategy games such as Warcraft and Starcraft, as well as fans of western turn-based strategy games such as Alpha Centauri and Civilization would most likely like Final Fantasy Tactics as well.

  A great game that's fun!!!
Review created: 07/13/06

This is not your typical Final Fantasy game where you travel through towns and dungeons and fight with 3 characters at a time! This is as the name says a tactical game! Don't worry though because there are pleanty of your favorite Final Fantasy stuff like magic, summons, side quest, and even those big birds known as Chocobo's are still in it! This is actually a very fun and challenging game where even some of the regular battles can be harder than story line battles. It's set up where you can have up to I think 5 or 6 fighters at a time usually you can only control 4 of the 6 in the beginning because 2 are usually guest characters. The battle field is set up where you have so, many blocks to move at a time going left, right, up, or down. In order to hit an enemy with a melee attack you must be next to them. If you attack them head on they have a greater chance of blocking your attack than if you attack them from behind. Casting magic and summons on an enemy cost mp just like all the rest of the Final Fantasy titles and these cannot be blocked like melee attacks. One of the great features is the ability to change jobs. Most start as a squire, chemist, or archer but, you have to level up to become a knight, wizard, monk, and many more exciting jobs with tons of different skills to explore!

I gave this a 5/5 because the story is pretty good and keeps you interested. The music is of course great like all the other Final Fantasy Titles. The graphics are actually very good for this game!

If you can find this game at a store where they run about $20 then don't hesitate to buy it because you will not be dissapointed!

One of the best strategy RPG's I have ever played. I poured tons of playing time into this game, and loved every second of it. There is so much to do even after you have beaten the story. Unlocking everything really takes a bunch of time, and it's worth it. The story is also one of the best, it really gets you involved in the game.

I would recommend this game to anyone who likes RPG's, especially if you have played any of the Final Fantasy series!

Far and away one of the most interesting installments of the entire Final Fantasy canon! Although there are some notable translation oddities ( some of which have become almost cult classic quotations in there own right ) the playability of the game is near endless! the storyline is still as fabulous as they come and the sheer scope of activities within the game itself lends to hours ( read DAYS! ) of pleasure! Between the storyline and the actual game mechanices, even the most benign gamer will find this edition a pleasure to play!

This is a really great game for final fantasy lovers that want to see a final fantasy storyline placed in a different type of game then the usual RPG. The game may seem a little harder if your used to the old fashioned Final Fantasy RPG type games, but it will become much simpler after a few hours, there is a great tutorial for beginners and is all around just a great game to play once you learn the battle style.

Great game for the Final Fantasy Fanatic. You get to build individual characters and can even get Cloud as a playable character. Tactics brings to mind another tactics type game "Front Mission". Tactics characters move along the same type guidleines, but you get to choose from many more characters in Tactics. Great game to have in your library.

A Strategy RPG for all time.
Review created: 10/02/09
by:

Arguably on of the best tactical console game to come out over the past 2 decades, it's easy to see why this franchise has spun off so many iterations; Ivalice being the place, and FFT is where it all started.

The plot is simple: The game is set in a fictional kingdom called Ivalice, which has just ended its war with the neighboring kingdom of Ordalia. The story follows Ramza Beoulve, a young cadet who finds himself thrust into the middle of a conflict, where two noble factions are coveting the throne of the kingdom.[2] While the war was caused by a conflict of succession, Ramza was exposed to a plot that involved the kingdom's dominant religious organization.

Now add in 20 hours of story, and 40-60 hours of replay value with all the different job classes, secret bosses, and leveling up you can do. This is a game that you'll want to work hard at.
