Excellent movie for any fan of Animation or CGI

The movie is set in the year 2065 after Earth has been invaded by a spirit like army of monsters. Most of the Earth's cities have been destroyed and its citizens killed. The remaining cities are protected by Domes designed to keep the phantoms out but its only a matter of time until the domes fail. One scientist, Dr Aki Ross, who is infected by a phantom, searches for clues to defeating the aliens among the wasteland that is the Earth. She is helped by Captain Gray Edwards, played by Alec Baldwin, as she searches for the eighth spirit. Opposing her is General Hein, played by James Woods, who feels that only an all out attack against the aliens will save the Earth. What ensues is a struggle between the humans as they fight amongst themselves, and the phantoms, as they try to save our world.

The plot is somewhat convoluted but still entertaining if you can buy into the movie. The voice overs are excellent. Besides the above actors Donald Sutherland, Ving Rhames and Steve Buscemi are also present and do a great job. The CGI is what makes the movie however and the figures and scenes are so lifelike its amazing. I especially liked the dream sequences by Aki and the fight scenes were stunning.

If you're a fan of Japanese animation, or Sci-Fi movies, then this dvd is for you. Fans of the Final Fantasy gaming series may not enjoy the film as much, at least from what I've been told, but most viewers will enjoy it. The dvd also has some great extras on the second disc which are worth the price of admission. Overall, this is a fun and visually stunning movie which is a must see.

i thought this movie rocked. it has awsome graphics, a great cast and i like the story line. Alot of people do make fun of it saying it is the story of scientology, but screw it. oh and as sure as you probably know, this movie has nothing to do with any of the final fantasy series.

Good unless you are a Final Fantasy fan

There's going to be two types of audiences. One that knows about Final Fantasy the game and those that don't. This is a good movie with breathtaking CGI graphics and has a GREAT storyline.... that is unless you are a Final Fantasy fan. If you are, you will find this movie a GREAT disappointment. Sure the CGI is good. Sure it follows the Final Fantasy themes. But that's it. Nothing new. I don't want to spoil the movie but it's the same theme as one of it's game. The minute you realize this, the movie is over. For me, I realized it after 10 minutes of the movie and the rest of the movie was bland.

this movie set the tone for advanced CG animations back in 2001. It still holds a high amount of respect for these type of films. There are few that even still can compare to it's visually stunning graphics. Plus the storyline is pretty good too. It was rumored at the time as the beginning of the end for hollywood actors. Proving you didn't even need real actors to make a great movie. It a one of a kind for sure...

Super computer graphics. Almost "human" in appearance. Won't be long before actors/actresses are hired only for there voices until such time as they become old hat. Geeks will eventually rule the film arena and Hollywood will die.

Review: Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within

The Spirits Within uses state of the art CGI graphics to bring the Final Fantasy characters to life. In true Final Fantasy tradition, the story involves an alternate world where survival of the human race and the planet are up for grabs. You have to love the folks at Square for their ability to think up great stuff! Combining their ingenuity with Columbia pictures makes for a movie you don't want to miss! Nice job guys! Another good one!

  WONDERFUL!!!

I loved 'Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within' when it first came out. The story line follows a new path when put against the PSX saga, and yet there are some distinct nuances that are similiar between the two.

Seen for the first time, there were some scenes that I thought had 'real life' actors playing the CG was soo real!

Every time I watch it now, I learn something new this movie is that good! A definite recommendation for Final Fantasy fans, and Titan A.E. fans!

This movie has a great storyline, great graphics, and a great cast of voice actors. If your a fan of the Final Fantasy video games your going to wonder why they call in Final Fantasy. Im a Final Fantasy fan and I wondered that myself. If you ignore the fact that its called Final Fantasy, the movie is actually really good. The only dispointment being is that there is nothing really Final Fantasy about it.

  One of the best
Review created: 08/02/09

The cgi in this animated tale is astounding and is only comparable to resident evil degeneration. This movie was way ahead of its time when brought to the big screen and i still adamantly believe this to be true by today's standards. The only complaint i really have about this movie is that even though it is guilded with the final fantasy name it really had nothing to do with any of the final fantasy video games. It is however a possible that in japan somewhere the story might have had something to do with one of their video games... still a really great movie and story.. If you're looking for something with closer ties to the video games you might wanna check out advent children...

good movie for h-core fans of FF.

this movie can get a little confusing and even i who have every FF game and movie found it bit weird. its not really related at all (it would seem) with FF really. but after watching it a few times it grew on me and i like the movie. but i warn you, this movie, unlike FFVII AC, this movie can be dull and extremely boring to a casual movie watcher who doesn't get it or not into FF, yup. but for any Hard Core FF fans out there...A MUST BUY MOVIE TO ADD TO YOUR GROWING FINAL FANTASY COLLECTION!

  Those Weren't Really Real People?
Review created: 02/09/09

GET OUT OF HERE!!! Those had to be real people, someone's pulling my leg I think. I know I've seen that chick in y'know, that movie, and that old guy he played a teacher or a cop I think on some TV show...

I mean, I'm pretty sure they were real people...

The story did drag just a bit, kinda cerebral so you had to pay attention a lot.

A Film Worth Paying Attention To.

Ahhh... the first attempt at a photorealistic film. Didn't fare too well back in the day. If one PAYS ATTENTION TO THE STORY it's enjoyable, because if you look for visual awe, you won't be too impressed. True, it doesn't mark up to the Final Fantasy video games, but is enjoyable nonetheless.

The characters in this film are animated so well, they are almost alive. The story line lacks a bit, but the animation more than makes up for its shortcomings. I'm a Final Fantasy game fan and even though this story has nothing to do with the games (other than Cid being in it), I enjoyed it anyway.

I like the fact that the seller was honest in their listing. It was used by in great shape and played perfectly - which turned out to be true.

I also liked the fact that their shipping charges were honestly reasonable - they were not looking to make a profit on shipping, like some ebayers are.

Overall, I would choose this ebayer over others because of their honesty.

This is a cartoon/anime type movie but it is really good. Shows how working together can achieve greatness. this movie shows how a doctor has contained a spirit within herself and what her next steps are to be. I don't recommend to children of a young age since the movie would probably confuse them to no end. this is a movie that collectors may want in a collection.

  Unique tale uniquely told.
Review created: 01/10/08

Contrary to what the critics tell you, this really IS a story well-told. Square Pictures went bankrupt telling this story due to the complexity of the CGI done (it was very far ahead of it's time and is still, by current standards, pretty amazing). The story is complicated and, generally, the public don't like complicated - they also don't like stories that seem, in essence, to be of an environmental nature as many have stated about the story line. HOWEVER, sometimes a complicated story is a good one and, in this case, it is. Also, the "environmental" issue at hand seems to be more of spirituality (NOT religious in nature, mind you) than an environmentally preachy film like Ferngully or the abomination Happy Feet. Overall, I recommend this release and think, if you are a sci-fi/CGI fan, will like it.
