A Return to Final Fantasy Roots

This is the last Final Fantasy game for the original Playstation, and it returns to the pure fantasy roots that launched this series. Gone are the dark and brooding storyline and characters from previous installments, such as FFVIII, that had some gamers wondering in which direction the whole series was heading. Square has really out-done themselves with this engaging and enjoyable delight. This game combines the finest of the past and present, the fantastic themes of the classic games brought to life by the technology of the PlayStation.
The bigheaded anime characters are a refreshing change from the last run of FF installments, and an eclectic mix. Zidane, the hero of the piece, is not human (and we're not sure what he is, but that tail rules out a human origin). He's a thief, and proud of it, although he really does like to help people. His quick wit and swashbuckling attitude are a breath of fresh air for a main character. Each character has its own distinct and unique personality, complete with quirks and endearing personalities. This is one of the reasons that I enjoy Final Fantasy; the character development is truly amazing. The full motion videos and cinematic sequences are spectacular, another hallmark of FF. The environments are unique and detailed and are a true pleasure. Another accomplishment is the superb soundtrack, which Square is known for, and it doesn't disappoint. Gameplay is standard but slow, and the magic system can be a little confusing at first but you soon fall into the rhythm.
Overall, FFIX is another top-notch addition to the Final Fantasy family, with an itelligent mix of fun, action, depth, and humor that makes it an incredible experience that you will enjoy from beginning to end.
PROS - Top notch character development. Lush, stunning graphics and cinematic sequences. Fun, action packed, engaging storyline that is reminescent of FF games past. Superb soundtrack.
CONS - Battles are on the slow side. High percentage of encounters can make gameplay feel dragging sometimes.
