This installment of Final Fantasy hearkens back to the original idea behind the series: High Fantasy. The story is very well done, the game play is smooth and there are plenty of side quests and mini games that break up the monotony that is found in many RPGs. For those of you who remember the Sierra games and have the complex associated with playing them (Having to pick up everything and save it) this game will continue that derangement as there is plenty of treasure hunting and hoarding to be had. If you are a fan of High Fantasy and like a good, long, in depth RPG, then this is the game for you.

If you liked any of the Final Fantasy, this is another home run hit. Rather than copy and paste you information, just know that this is another beautiful complex story style RPG game with great CGI and 60+ hours of game play. The interesting thing is they went in the direction of making the characters look more cartoonish (like Nintendo). Great game if you can get past that.

Pros:
1) Great Story
2) Self Contained finish to the story (sorta unless you plan on playing FFX-2)
3) Beautiful CGI

Cons:
1) Long hours to power up player
2) Much easier to beat than VIII. I suggest you get a guide if you want to spend less time and enjoy the story of the game.

A Return to Final Fantasy Roots
Review created: 11/26/07

This is the last Final Fantasy game for the original Playstation, and it returns to the pure fantasy roots that launched this series. Gone are the dark and brooding storyline and characters from previous installments, such as FFVIII, that had some gamers wondering in which direction the whole series was heading. Square has really out-done themselves with this engaging and enjoyable delight. This game combines the finest of the past and present, the fantastic themes of the classic games brought to life by the technology of the PlayStation.

The bigheaded anime characters are a refreshing change from the last run of FF installments, and an eclectic mix. Zidane, the hero of the piece, is not human (and we're not sure what he is, but that tail rules out a human origin). He's a thief, and proud of it, although he really does like to help people. His quick wit and swashbuckling attitude are a breath of fresh air for a main character. Each character has its own distinct and unique personality, complete with quirks and endearing personalities. This is one of the reasons that I enjoy Final Fantasy; the character development is truly amazing. The full motion videos and cinematic sequences are spectacular, another hallmark of FF. The environments are unique and detailed and are a true pleasure. Another accomplishment is the superb soundtrack, which Square is known for, and it doesn't disappoint. Gameplay is standard but slow, and the magic system can be a little confusing at first but you soon fall into the rhythm.

Overall, FFIX is another top-notch addition to the Final Fantasy family, with an itelligent mix of fun, action, depth, and humor that makes it an incredible experience that you will enjoy from beginning to end.

PROS - Top notch character development. Lush, stunning graphics and cinematic sequences. Fun, action packed, engaging storyline that is reminescent of FF games past. Superb soundtrack.

CONS - Battles are on the slow side. High percentage of encounters can make gameplay feel dragging sometimes.

This game is for sure the best game in the entire Playstation series. It is the best because it changes from the more-human chracters of FF VII and VIII to non-human chracters in a medival world. Also it has the best backgrounds and worlds that you will find among the Playstion series. I highly recomend this game to all Final Fantasy lovers and to new players alike!

  THE CHARACTERS SHRUNK AGAIN!!
Review created: 03/08/08

The characters have once again shrunk back to figures that are not proportionally contructed... so much for us thinking that Squaresoft has finally turned sane and has attained enlightenment with their release of FFVIII... Personally, i feel that this game is not worthy of the FF name... an average and boring storyline, overly easy battles, limit breaks that all deal 9999 damage (the only thing that differs is the animation)... Its really quite a dissapointment... It was not a big improvement from FFVIII in terms of gameplay and graphic quality... However, the game is still above average for an RPG and definitely worth trying... just don't compare it to FFVII which is so so so so much better in terms of every aspect except for maybe the graphic quality...

Final Fantasy 9 is the classic story of a princess, the scoundrel that is assigned to kidnap her and several other classic characters that become entangled in the adventure.

The graphics are quite decent, the music is amazing and the side-quests will provide hours and hours of extra playing time. The system of learning abilities from equipment is very simple and effective. The game is one of my personal favorites of the Final Fantasy series. You won't be let down by this title.

This has to be my personal favorite final fantasy games.

Enjoy the unique "fuse weapon system" where you can fuse 2 different weapons together to make complete new ones.

Character customization is also a plus, learn new abilities from the weapons you chose!

The cutscense are amazing, there graphics outweigh any other ps1 titles.

The story line, awesome... Especially if your one of those people who loves the whole medieval time settings.

I am not very good at explaning games, so youll have to check this one out for yourself FFIX 5/5!

Pros:
1) Long gameplay - This game is not short, it lasts and lasts :)
2) Unique fuse weapon system
3) Brilliant storyline
4) Great Setting
5) Amazing cutscenes
6) Extended Content - In this game you discover lost continents, venture through unpassable mountains, and even other planets.

Cons:
1) The queen looks like a fat pig ;)

  Crazy

I love it. It's made very well and ver fun to play and love the soundtrack. Why can't more games be like Final Fantasy. As with the other games in the series, Final Fantasy IX has the ability to grab your attention from the time you fire it up until the last boss is put down. Previous entries into the game's lineage took a more dramatic, cinematic route to do what a role-playing game does best--tell a story. That style led to some complaints from headstrong fans and role-playing gamers alike. In response to this, while not sacrificing what new technology they've built into the series, SquareSoft has backtracked a bit. To put it simply, they've gone back to their roots while forging ahead.
When we last left the Final Fantasy characters, Princess Garnet was starting to break out of her shell and put to rest the notion that she was a snob. The kidnapping attempt by Zidane, oddly enough, started a few new friendships. Story elements continuously roll on, never leaving you to wonder for too long. Vivi, you may remember, started out as a Black Mage, and the Queen of Alexandria's story was left far from finished as well.

But even players with no experience in this series can pick this up as a new game. Final Fantasy IX's story follows a group trying to stop Brahne, the evil Queen of Alexandria, in her quest to rule the world. Zidane, a skilled thief, teams with a young mage, a royal knight, and a princess, who all soon discover that the queen's threats are fronting an even more sinister plot involving a powerful sorcerer named Kuja. It's your job to control the eight playable characters--each of whom begin the game with one weapon, one piece of armor, and one special power--and to uncover Kuja's motives before he carries out his deadly plan.

I wanted to go back and buy and an old classic, and because I never finished it when I had it long ago. The 1st disc worked alright, with some rough spots, but still worked. The 2nd disc has some bad scratches, and I can't get past a certain part of the game because it freezes up.

  Greatest Game ever

I'm all about the old school games, and I've always played this when I was younger never actually being able to beat it because of one messed up disc. I've gotten to the same part billions of times, and finally found a new disc set, and am going to soon beat the game. This is for sure one of if not the BEST of ALL the Final Fantasy games. Even with "outdated" graphics, the storyline and the way it hooks you makes it better than any PS3, Xbox360, or Wii game out there. Its simply awesome.

  Another hit from Square Enix
Review created: 11/10/08

Final Fantasy 9 takes you to Gaia where a mismatched group try to save their planet from an unstoppable evil from another realm.

The story was well planned: it is more humorous than others but does not lack the power to draw you in.

The characters are lovable and remain with you.

The quest has its challenges. However you may find this one alot easier than others, especially if you started playing the games on the newer systems.

Graphics are good if you keep in mind it is a Playstation 1 game.

There are several side quests to keep you entertained if you start getting bored with the storyline: Tetra Cards and Chocobo Hot & Cold to name the top two.

The only down side I have find is the leveling and abilities. If you want 100% (meaning every character has all their abilities) it will take you a while. Leveling can also take a bit later in the game.

My advice here would be to work on leveling/abilities for a while then go do some side quests. It helps from driving yourself crazy!

9 outta 10 stars!

  A "Not so Final" Fantasy
Review created: 11/01/08
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this game because like the others before and after it, the Final Fantasy series is definitely one to fall in love with. This series is what got me hooked on RPG (Role Playing Games).

My favorite reasons for loving this game is the battle system, the storyline, the settings, and most of all; the music. Each and evey melody is quite the piece of art. And the characters themselves suit well for comedic scenarios that will keep you interested, and wanting more when you beat the game.

There really isn't anything I dislike about this 9th installment in the Final Fantasy series. Granted, the graphics ar enot all that great when compared to modern days game graphics. But one has to admit that for a game that was originally released for the PS1 (Playstation 1) console, the graphics beat the rest. Still today I love to go back and play the earlier Final Fantasy games, and this one is usually where I find myself seated in front of my TV, happily playing in a world truely its own.

This was my first FInal Fantasy Game, so I gues syou could say that I am very attached. I highly recommend this as a first if anyone wants to try out the Final Fantasy series! You won't regret it!

This game is a real joy to play again. Not lending is a good idea.
So finding this treasure is simply wonderful. The characters are so interesting to work with. It is one of the best designed Final Fantasy games of the whole series. The time and efforts of the game creators flows throughout the whole game. Truly a rare Final Fantasy treasure makes this game worth the effort to find and bid for.

  Another Great Final Fantasy Game

This series is by far one of my favorites for RPG's.

I have played them all and I always will. And FF9 is near the top of my favorite games list.

This game will keep you playing for hours, with 4 discs there is a lot of gaming to do in order to finish the epic story. Then you have the extra stuff that you can try and obtain, which adds more to your total gameplay time.

This is another must play for any RPG fan, especially if you are familiar to the final fantasy series!
