Final Fantasy IX Strategy Guide Analysis
Review created: 02/13/06(updated 02/14/06)

Being an owner of every Final Fantasy game and strategy guide I can assure you this was the worst created guide ever for any Final Fantasy game, and maybe even any video game for that matter. The actual game is another story, I'd rate it as excellent, 5/5, but the guide would get a 0/5 if it were at all possible. Unfortunately, this is the only tangible guide that can be purchased for Final Fantasy IX, so you're out of options if you wish to receive help through the game.

Why is this guide so bad you may wonder? Well, when I go to a local store and drop $14.99 on a STRATEGY GUIDE, I expect the guide to tell me all of the secrets and details one may not discover themself. Here's the deal, on literally every page of this guide there are 1-3 captions displaying "please visit www.playonline.com for a more in depth analysis on defeating this boss...discovering this secret....saving this character....etc".

Why should one buy a strategy guide, then have it flat out tell you that it is not nearly giving you all of the information the author has discovered. I am not sure if the playonline site is even displaying all the tips for Final Fantasy 9 anymore.

So here's the deal, when I am sitting in front of my TV with a controller in hand, strategy guide in lap, I do not want to get up and go to a PC three times per page to get additional tips that the strategy guide fails to provide.

Yes, the guide does provide enough information to take you through the game completely, but being a gamer who likes to complete each additional side quest and obtain every possible item, you certainly will need the assistance of www.playonline.com.

I believe the MSRP price on this guide should've been $4.99 and not $14.99 because of the information it purposely lacks. None of the other FF guides in the history of the series were produced this way.

Recommended? Absolutely not, buy the game but get tips elsewhere.

  Its Okay
Review created: 01/17/09

I love the game not the guide. Its okay but can be made better. As with the other games in the series, Final Fantasy IX has the ability to grab your attention from the time you fire it up until the last boss is put down. Previous entries into the game's lineage took a more dramatic, cinematic route to do what a role-playing game does best--tell a story. That style led to some complaints from headstrong fans and role-playing gamers alike. In response to this, while not sacrificing what new technology they've built into the series, SquareSoft has backtracked a bit. To put it simply, they've gone back to their roots while forging ahead.
When we last left the Final Fantasy characters, Princess Garnet was starting to break out of her shell and put to rest the notion that she was a snob. The kidnapping attempt by Zidane, oddly enough, started a few new friendships. Story elements continuously roll on, never leaving you to wonder for too long. Vivi, you may remember, started out as a Black Mage, and the Queen of Alexandria's story was left far from finished as well.

But even players with no experience in this series can pick this up as a new game. Final Fantasy IX's story follows a group trying to stop Brahne, the evil Queen of Alexandria, in her quest to rule the world. Zidane, a skilled thief, teams with a young mage, a royal knight, and a princess, who all soon discover that the queen's threats are fronting an even more sinister plot involving a powerful sorcerer named Kuja. It's your job to control the eight playable characters--each of whom begin the game with one weapon, one piece of armor, and one special power--and to uncover Kuja's motives before he carries out his deadly plan.

The book relies heavily on a supplement that used to exist at Playonline.com That supplement is no longer there, and I couldn't find it anywhere else on the internet. That alone makes the guide useless.

Most likely the worst Guide ever!!!

Yeah well if you have bought previous guides for the other Final Fantasy games then you would think wow this one will be just as good...WRONG!!! This one is the worst guide ever!!! It only gives you the basics on what to do and you could figure that out on your own!!! When you reach a boss it tells you like one tip and then sends you to playonline.com!!! The side quest are all on playonline.com so, don't plan on getting much from the guide in that area!!! Your best bet is to use a guide from IGN.com or go to gamefaqs.com (I recommend gamefaqs.com) otherwise enjoy jumping back and forth from the guide to the computer none stop just to get through one section of a town...

I love that it shows you just enough to get you through the game but also leaves some decisions up to you as how to do certain things in the game

  Adding my two cents.
Review created: 03/26/09

It's already been said much more thoroughly than I feel like saying it, so let me just sum up my feelings in one thought:
When a guide's boss strategies are LITERALLY: "Try not to die!" you have entered a dark and unforgiving land of horrors no human mind should be made to endure.

  worst strategy guide ever made
Review created: 01/05/09

Someone else wrote a more detailed description. But this is the worst Strategy guide I have ever seen. I think saying things like "be sure to look for discarded items as you walk" is completely useless. Why would I pay for a book that tells me what we all know about FF games. If the thing is just going to say there are items somewhere, find them than there is no purpose to the strategy guide. Do not buy this strategy guide.

Final Fantasy IX Strategy Guide Review
Review created: 04/10/08

I would recommend this strategy guide to anyone who desires a deeper gaming experience while playing Final Fantasy IX. Sadly, the "PlayOnline" tips that the strategy guide recommends are no longer available on the PlayOnline website; however, this guide is still very helpful. This seller is also very courteous and prompt, two of the qualities I look for in a seller.

  FF 9 Strategy Guide
Review created: 09/16/06(updated 09/16/06)
by:

If you just recently bought FF-9, this review is definitely worth heeding. Buying this strategy guide is the biggest waste of 15-20 dollars I had ever spent. The strategy guide relies extremely heavily on a "PlayOnline" website. You expect that when stuck on a certain part of the game to be able to refer to a "Strategy Guide" for help, but instead, seems to me more as a referral manual more than anything else. Don't waste your time buying this strategy guide. Just to use it I had to get my laptop and use the wireless internet and have it right there with me at my TV just so if I got stuck, I didn't have to get up and go to my desktop.

Nothing sucks more than to have to stop playing your game just to find out one quick thing.
