Album Notes
Personnel: Stan Getz (tenor saxophone); Kenny Barron (piano); Eddie Del Barrio, Frank Zottoli (synthesizer); Alex Blake (bass); Terri Lyne Carrington (drums).
Recorded live at the Munich Philharmonic Hall, Munich, Germany in July 1990. Includes liner notes in Zan Stewart.
Though Stan Getz was dying of cancer at the time of this 1990 performance, his signature sound is as full and lush as ever here. Five of these 14 tracks were premiered on his current studio album of the time, APASIONADO, which had been released earlier that year. Eddie Del Barrio, musical director and keyboardist for that release, is also on hand for this concert filling out the orchestrations with (mostly) subtle synthesizer pads. In his improvisations Getz walked a fine line between an ultra-cool and a hyper-romantic place. His behind-the-beat phrasing goes a long way in ballads such as "Lonely Lady" and Mal Waldron's "Soul Eyes," as well as mid- and up-tempo standards "Slow Boat to China" and "Seven Steps to Heaven." Getz's melodic flights of fancy and rhythmic suppleness lift the songs to unforeseen heights, bringing lively and thoughtful readings to the wildly appreciative jazz fans in Munich.
