Publisher's Note "My Dear Wife, I do not feel prepared to die." These were the words of Major Thomas Jefferson Halsey, who commanded the Union Army's 11th New Jersey Regiment. Major Halsey's firsthand accounts, written between 1862 and 1865, record the Civil War as it was lived, fought, and endured by one man and his family. Halsey began at Fredericksburg, was wounded at Chancellorsville, returned to the battlefield, and was captured and incarcerated in the notorious Andersonville prison.
This book contains 70 of Halsey's original letters reproduced in his own hand. Each is printed on its own two-page spread, with an essay providing a narrative account of the progress of the war. The book contains over 200 period photographs, maps, and present-day photographs of sites and memorabilia.
