A Short Study on Jewish Traditions

My wife had seen this production before and I, in junior high school, had sung a song in the choir from this production, but I had never seen it. My wife was convinced I would hate it because I prefer action, adventure, fantasy, etc. However, I also have an interest in Jewish people and their culture. And Fiddler on the Roof was very revealing as to the relationship between culture and tradition, and how one feeds off of the other and vice-a-versa. From the theme song all the way to the unhappy ending, tradition rang supreme throughout, even to the shunning of one's own children for marriage outside the "faith" to an "enemy". I found the acting to be very good, as well as the music, scenery, dancing. I can easily see why it was nominated for several Academy Awards. It earned every one of them. Whether you agree, disagree, or could careless about Jewish culture and what makes a Jew tick (that secret is not revealed in the movie), you find yourself easily identifying with the primary characters or the offspring seeking to find their own way without flagrantly violating the customs and culture of their people. Even the youngest child made her move in rebellion only because the man she loved was also inclining to her point of view and did not agree with his own culture, upbringing, or attitude possessed toward the minority person. Much can be learned in terms of stretching beyond one's own biases and pet peeves and accommodating the cultures and beliefs of others around them; not necessarily endorsing or adopting them, but accepting them at face value for what they are and thus enjoying them as well as the companionship and friendship of others from places that may be foreign to us, even forbidding and hostile, until we learn the truth that those people are exactly that, people too, just like you and me, with their own traditions, and likes and dislikes. What a magnificent earth we all could live on if we learned to respect the cultures and values of other societies, and make use of them to further and advance our own culture and society, thus making this world a better and safer place to live.
