How Fiction Works by Oakley M. Hall (2004, Paperback)

This is the book. An excellent primer for the prospective fiction writer. Oakley had a hero - Ambrose Bierce - about whom he wrote fictional accounts - but also from whom he learned a lot about writing and he passes it along with many more of his own insights and intelligence. This is good stuff.
