We know Nora from movies like Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail. I had never read her screenplays or earlier books, but I enjoyed this Neck book.

Her sensahuma is charming and definately aligns with my age group...pushing 60. She fills the book with wonderful stories about her time with the Kennedy administration, protesting and marching in the 60's, women's lib in the 70's, and nothing is overdone or boringly detailed.

It's a very fast and quick read. Light. Funny. Charming.

I enjoyed this book and could easily relate to Nora's adventures.

Nora Ephron's I Feel Bad About My Neck is definitely a trip through the wry. The book opens with the title essay about aging and concludes with a rumination about death called "Considering the Alternative." Packed between are essays about books treasured along the way, thoughts on bodily upkeep, the stages of parenting, a timeline of beloved cookbooks, cabbage strudel, her love affair with an apartment and "The Story of My Life in 3,500 Words or Less."

The book is a quilt fashioned from swatches of a life graced with privilege, which can make empathizing with Ephron a bit difficult, at times. We all end up too aware of our body's deterioration, but we don't all have our hair done twice a week or have our unwanted facial fuzz "threaded" by a woman who uses "a fantastic and thrilling method of hair removal she had learned in Russia." As far as money is concerned, the specifics of financial outlay, throughout the book, are far less than universal.

Most women will love the essay about her purse. Ephron is writing here for women "who understand that their purses are reflections of negligent housekeeping, hopeless disorganization, a chronic inability to throw anything away." Her list of permanent handbag contents includes loose Tic-Tacs, lipsticks with no covers, leaky ballpoint pens and crumpled tissues that might have been used but equally well might not have been -- who can tell?

Despite the melancholy tone of this collection, the book has many laugh-out-loud moments. As proven by her many successful movies and humor pieces, Ephron is always good for an amusing line, a wry smile, and sometimes a grin of recognition as she homes in on one of our own dubious obsessions.

I Feel Bad About My Neck will certainly not resonate with anyone who is resentful of their socio-economic condition, but if a good laugh and light reading is what you are after, you will enjoy this book.

I got a lot of chuckles when I read this book, but most of the laughs would only be understood by a woman over 40. The first half was funnier. I thought the author sort of ran out of ideas near the end. Still a pleasant escapist read for an evening.

Definitely NOT a Pain in the Neck

Women of "a certain age" like Nora and me will relate to her take on life. She readily admits to feeling bad about her neck, but her overall perspective is witty, light and dry. Keen observations as to why turning 60 now is not like it was for our mothers and grandmothers ring true. And Nora lets one secret out of the bottle--the hair color bottle, that is! Gently drape a scarf around that neck (surgery's not the answer), hold your head high, and walk boldly through life. But first, enjoy a copy of Nora's book.

The book I Feel Bad About My Neck reads like a monologue by a stand-up comedian, so if that is what you want it is great. It's entartainingly shallow with lovely profound bits, i.e. laughs and thoughts together. Vanity, complaints, but also a great lust for life. Enjoyable.

Book as object, Am 1st edition: beautiful! Pictures, pages, typo, size, everything.

I immensely enjoyed this very quick read. It went too fast and was sorry it ended. If you enjoy Nora Ephron's work, you will love this upbeat, realistic look at life through the decades of being a career minded household chief cook and bottle washer, daughter, wife, mother, friend and overall citizen of the world. I heard about the book from seeing Nora Ephron on Oprah (whom I seldom watch). Ms. Ephron is witty, direct and her approach to life, truthfully refreshing. Will buy more copies to give away as gifts. A must read for everywoman who is just trying to matter.

I Feel Bad About My Neck by Nora Ephron 2006

My husband and I, both aged around sixty, chuckled frequently throughout the reading of this humorous account of aging, albeit among the affluent. It spurred us to get one of Ephron's novels, "Heartburn", a fictionalized account of the travails of a young single mother, apparently based loosely on the fact that Ephron was at one time married to Carl Bernstein, who fell in love with another woman. These two works are a couple of decades apart, and inbetween, Ephron wrote the screenplay for Harry met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle. Her comic viewpoint and her abibility to put that into writing does not need my endorsement. The number of weeks this book was on the New York Times Best Seller list speaks for itself.

This was the most entertaining book I have ever read. I truly enjoyed Nora Ephron's laugh at women's aging. I heartily recommend it for any woman over 40 to read. It was fast reading and I could associate with many of her stories, that only a woman would find funny.

Nora Ephron's book about aging, and fighting the effects, will resonate with any woman over 50, who has ever contemplated Botox, Plastic Surgery, or wondered who the wrinkly person was looking back at them from the bathroom mirror. Her wry self-deprecating humor hasn't changed over the years!

I love books that focus, in a humorous way, on the problems that all of us must face when getting older. I especially liked Nora Ephron's style of writing about these life progression trials. I laughed many times as I could relate them to myself or someone I love. I am telling alll my friends how wonderful this novel is and is definitely a GOOD read.

I read this book in about an hour, and there were parts I just laughed out loud until I cried. I certainly could relate so much! If you have never lived in New York, the parts about the rent control were kind of boring, but as a whole, I enjoyed the book!

An absolute necessary read for every woman over 50. She has a good grasp on all those subjects that we were never warned about as young woman(or we nevervpaid attention to because we could not even imagine being 50!!)...one day you turn 50 and all the rules change, whether we like to admit or not....i bought it, read it and passed it on to another "aging" friend ...e-bay has made it very easy to shop right from the comfort of home and have purchases delivered right to my door. how great is that!!!...i love it!!!

What I love about E-Bay is it is fast, honest, secure, and saves me a 120-mile round trip to town to hunt for something I need. I live out in the sticks in the Colorado mountains. Thank you for making life easier!

If you bring to this book the necessary qualifications, you will LAUGH YOURSELF SILLY while taking a very sweet ride through the 60's, 70's and beyond with a very funny lady. There should be a disclaimer on the cover of this wonderful book that reads: ONLY FOR WOMEN WITH WRINKLES, BAD FEET AND VARICOSE VEINS. It really does take a woman who faces her mirror with some regret to even relate, let alone, laugh. It takes a reader who has dealt with the pains of losing lovers and friends, seeing kids leave nests and the inevitable changing of seasons, eyesight and hair color to appreciate the great human condition called "aging" shared by Ephron. (Yes, I am part of the 50+ audience for which this book is intended.)

I have been reading Nora Ephron's writings for years. I think she is a clear, concise, funny and sharp author. All women can relate to what she has to say and I'm glad that she has the words to say what most of us are thinking. She's honest and authentic. I wish she was a friend of mine.

I Feel Bad About My Neck by Nora Ephron
Review created: 02/21/08

This was an easy read. Great vacation book. ( Think sitting on the beach!) I bought it after glancing through it at the local bookstore. It looked funny and was! I could totally relate to the aging process Nora was talking about. I guess it is easier to laugh with others when you can relate. I recommend this book to any woman going through mid-life issues. The forties slip up on you and before you know it, a nip here and a tuck there is NOT out of the question! If you like to laugh out loud when you read, this is the book for you. And if aging gracefully is not in your vocabulary, then this is definitely the book to read. Happy reading!
