This is a 15-cut program featuring the work of trumpeter Don Cherry as a sideman with both Ornette Coleman and Steve Lacy. The Coleman tunes are easy enough to pick out -- he wrote them -- and feature him in the context of the great quartet and early on Contemporary with Ed Blackwell, Charlie Haden and the great composer and alto saxophonist. The material recorded with Lacy is made up primarily of Thelonious Monk tunes with an interesting reading of Duke Ellington's "The Mystery Song," and the two horns -- pocket trumpet and Lacy's trademark soprano saxophone -- play odd shaped harmonies on the heads. While this music is certainly wonderful, the strange manner in which it is presented leaves plenty to be desired. Cherry was also a great innovative leader as well as a soloist in the aforementioned groups, and the cuts with Coleman seem oddly chosen from a number of early albums, while there simply isn't enough of Cherry's work with Lacy. ~ Thom Jurek
