Album Notes FAST JAPANESE SPIN CYCLE was released just before 1994's BEE THOUSAND made Dayton, Ohio's Guided By Voices overnight indie stars (if eight years of albums, EPs, and singles can be considered "overnight.") Somewhat lost in the shuffle at the time, this disc is an excellent example of Guided By Voices' skewed sensibilities. In just barely twelve minutes, CYCLE combines elements of R.E.M.-style jangle, Beatlesque pop, Wire-derived artsiness, and post-punk sonic aggression. The eight cut-and-paste songs include the magnificent "My Impression Now" and "Indian Fables," along with the puzzling, near-atonal "Snowman." All of the tracks sound as though they're being improvised on the spot and off-the-cuff, making CYCLE one of GbV's most compelling and curious releases.
