Wonderfully inventive, innovative, and plain fun!

I love cake.
in both senses of the phrase, but here i'm mainly intending to focus on the music group. this band is absolutely fantastic, and this album sparks off a career that is full of infectious enjoyment. there are some low points, but these even out in the end with multiple listenings. the songs that initially didn't appeal to me very much grew on me. the high points are many, but i would encourage close attention to some of the deeper cuts that might get overlooked, such as "italian leather sofa" and "open book". "open book", upon its first listen, was almost shocking in its experimentation. the guitar riff is very nearly atonal until you allow the melodic structure to resolve itself over time. it's truly a ground breaking track.
this record really represents the best an album has to offer, it gives you multiple tracks that will appeal to immediately, making you want to hear them over and over, and it also has cuts that will draw you back and force you to develop a deeper appreciation for the band's more experimental stylings.
cake is great, both at birthday parties and in your cd player. just make sure not to mix them up.
