Katie Holstom (Loretta Young) is headed to Nursing School from her Farm she has been raised on. but lost her money in a scheme by a con painter along the way. Katie needs to earn MORE money to go to nursing school. so she is hired as the new maid/kitchen helper for the young and so very intelligent Congressman Morley ( handsome Joseph Cotton) Katie is everything but the silent type and her opinions are often voiced and we find behind the beautiful face is a very intelligent woman who though avid reading is "well read' and very insightful. Toss in a butler (Charles Bickford ) as the very trusted family man who knows every secret in the house. ADD Mother and funny Ethel Barrymore as the Congressman's Mother who at every turn has "bets" going with each other HOW FAR~ Glenn Morley (Cotton) will GO to "attract" Katie's attention.
Glenn tries to show Katie his finesse on the ice pond not realizing Katie was a Dorothy Hamill on ice~ most amusing~ Katie who is amazingly knowledgeable on politics for her time and is the picture of honesty is talked into running for political office. But her "past" where she is conned out of her nursing school money by the painter is made public and a Embaressed.... Katie flees back to her farm where she was raised. hot on her tiny heels is Glenn to ask Katie to marry him. ADD some great scenes where Glenn and Katie's big beefy brothers go after the corrupt cons to make them tell the truth and you have a fun chase fight scene. a very young HUNKY James Arness (Matt Dillon on gunsmoke) is one her her many brothers.
The Charm and Romance we find in this classic movie is timeless. Young won an Oscar for her role as Katie. this is one for all ages. High marks for Bickford and Ethel Barrymore as the supporting cast who shine shine shine~ Political message is simple: Honest good people win in the end.
a solid 20 out of 10 one of the best and hard to find~ this is a KEEPer move you will cherish each time you watch it~ a family favorite~
