Fargo Rock City - Another Chuck Klosterman Gem!
Review created: 10/16/05

Chuck Klosterman does it again - following Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs with another cultural and societal critique that is as honest as it is fun, funny and exciting. In Fargo Rock City, Chuck Klosterman explores 1980s rock 'n roll through the eyes of a Fargo teenager who is trying to understand himself as much as he's trying to understand hard rock, hair rock, glam rock, etc through the tunes of motley crue, def leppard, poison, cinderella and others. If you grew up during the 80s, love music or enjoy Chuck's other writings in Spin, Washington Post, or GQ - you will really enjoy this one. Below are just a *couple* of the MANY raving blurbs about Fargo Rock City:

Stephen King: Writing about American pop culture doesn't get any better than this or any funnier or any more readable. If you love rock 'n' roll, you will love Fargo Rock City.

Q Magazine: Eitehr one of the saddest or greatest music books ever written.

The Independent Weekly: This is the best music journalism book of the year.

  Fargo Rock City review

I think that Fargo Rock City is one of the best books on heavy metal ever written. It is very well with plenty of intelligent insight into sociology and music without it being overly complicated. I think that any music fan, regardless of what their favorite genre is, can related to Chuck Klosterman`s musical devotion.

Any Chuck Klosterman book is a fun read.

Even if you weren't a hard core heavy metal fan you will like Chuck Klosterman's writing. He is witty, poignant and makes interesting associations. When I read his books I feel like I'm hanging out with an old friend talking about "back in the day." I'm sure I will read all of his books. A greater writer and spokesman for a misunderstood and misrepresented generation. Actually, a great writer period.

This book came quickly and was in excellent condition. There wasn't much wear and tear on the cover. And I find it absolutely ridiculous that I MUST enter 100 characters just to tell someone that he or she sent me a book that looked exactly the way I wanted it to look.

  I laughed, and even sighed

I love music about as much as Chuck Klosterman does. At least... I think I do. It's to the point where I'd compare notes and soak in every word he wrote and evaluate and reevaluate my own ideas and conceptions about music. From the angle of metal, it really put an indie snob like me in my place. All you really have to do is realize that, right or wrong, he's as much in love with these bands as you may be in your "higher brow" genres, and in realizing that validates not only himself but popular music in general. What he basically succeeds in doing is reminding us all that it's just not fair to kick aside just about any form of art. It helps that this book is extremely engaging, hilarious, and deprecating to everyone equally. Read it.
