6 stars outta 5! Say Farewell to Kings!

1977 was a great year for Rush "A Farewell to Kings" is the bands 5th studio release and from the self titled beginning track until the very ending of the incredible jam Cygnus X-1 this is an outstanding concept album! Xanadu is easily one of the best (and also longest) songs that the band ever released. The storytelling ability of these really solid and classic tracks coupled with the great vocalist Geddy Lee, the world's best percussionist "The Professor" Neil Peart and one of the absolutely most overlooked (and chronically under-rated) lead guitarists on the planet Alex Lifeson combined in the mid-70's to make music that still stands the test of time yet today. In fact, this cd has been in regular rotation and played nearly weekly since I first owned it on cassette way back in the early 1980's...yes, it is that good!

Any true Rush fan will have Xanadu in his top 5 favorite Rush songs.
Closer to the Heart makes me feel so good. Cygnus X-1 can really be compared to "2112". Bottom line of you like Rush, particularly the older Rush, you gotta have this one.

Rush - Always a Favorite of Mine
Review created: 08/10/08

This is an album that I have loved since it came out. Rush is one of my favorite bands! When my brother was a drummer in a band when I was a teenager, I loved to listen to them. They would play Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Metallica... but when it came to complex and perfectionist drumming, my brother always said Neil Peart was the best. Geddy Lee's amazing vocals and bass/keyboarding are brilliant, and Alex Lifeson's guitar is moving and original. Love this album.

some of the best in progressive rock ou tof the 70's. The musicianship of this band is top notch. It is very rare to hear this much sound coming from only 3 guys... Not to mention the talent of the individual mucisians. I am thoroughly impressed.

  a farewell
Review created: 12/10/09

This is in their top 10 for sure. Xanadu, closer to the heart, and madrigal. Not listed as one of their concept albums, in a way it was one. The heavy use of the theme, fantasy and dreaming, links the songs together. The music parts show their advancing talent in the way they play and use new "gadgets" to create a thick layer of sound. Grab it and enjoy. Good sound system is a must! (just listen to the intro to Xanadu!)

Star collector is obviously not a mucisian. Gee, he might be inclined to favor brittany spears next recording
