Album Notes FANTASIA 2000 was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media. The new FANTASIA is an extension of the original, which Walt Disney initially conceived as a work in progress. This time, one of the eight sequences mating animation with classical music favorites is a holdover from the 1940 version, specifically Mickey Mouse in a dramatization of Dukas' impressionist tone poem "The Soceror's Apprentice" (the old Leopold Stowkowski soundtrack has been replaced by a digital recording of James Levine conducting the Chicago Symphony). New sequences have been animated for excerpts from Beethoven's "Symphony No. 5," Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," Respighi's "The Pines of Rome," and four others, including a clever Peter Schickele (a.k.a. P.D.Q. Bach) pastiche of all four of Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance" marches. Classical purists may balk at the musical abbreviations, but--given the shortened attention spans that are the hallmark of the MTV era--a little of a good thing is clearly preferable to nothing.
