Family Guy - The Freakin' Sweet Collection (DVD, 2004)

“Family Guy” is an interesting series: moments of absolute brillance and parts where you simply don’t think it’s funny.

And that’s the problem: continuity. Unlike “The Simpsons”, “Family Guy” suffers from a very up and down pace. You’ll laugh your sides off at some of its offbeat parts and scratch your head at others.

The characters are great. Peter and especially Stewie are both consistently funny (though sometimes put in unfunny situations). The rest of the crew is so-so though most of the jokes will happen with these two.

The menus and format work fine but nothing is truly notable. There’s a lot to see here though I question the replay value somewhat. If a compilation was made of the funniest moments from “Family Guy”, it would be a runaway hit.

Until then, though, get ready for a rollercoaster ride of the good and the not so good. If you don’t like off-color humor or pop culture jokes, you probably aren’t a big animated fan anyway. The rest of us will chuckle.

The show that FOX Network deemed too outspoken and brash for prime time, and which it ultimately dropped from its roster, has since experienced record DVD sales and become the most-watched show ever aired on the Cartoon Network. Among many other distinctions, the animated family series goes where even THE SIMPSONS fears to tread, with its bumbling oaf of a father, outcast teenage daughter, beefy blockhead son, urbane alcoholic dog, and murderous baby with plans for world domination. This collection features five episodes handpicked by creator Seth MacFarlane, which comprise his personal favorites: "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein," "Road to Rhode Island," "To Live and Die in Dixie," "I Am Peter, Hear Me Roar, and "Lethal Weapons."

I like this DVD because I like family Guy. Except, I didn't see anything that was not available on any other DVD. Overall, to complete a collection it is a must have.

CLASSIC...Yes it does come on their already released DVD but this is a must for any collector! Special Features also put this over the top. If you collect, spend the 10 dollars and add this DVD

Some of it is really of no interest, some of it isn't. With "American Dad" out on TV with many episodes shown, the segment of the DVD that gives you insight into that show is really obsolete. I suppose some of the interviews might be interesing for looking for more insight on Seth MacFarlane, or for those who have never seen the man behind the show. The interview about Family Guy Season 4 is interesting in retrospect, I suppose.


The restored "Road To Rhode Island" doesn't really make it worth it. It's just the one deleted segment, and it really isn't funny. I notice the first review says "true fans have to have this scene," frankly, I think that's ridiculous and pedantic. If by "true" fans, you mean insanely obsessed, then I guess you'd be correct. It's not really offensive, but it doesn't add anything to the episode (which is a good one).
Now, it sounds like my review is completely negative. Why is this worth it?

Well, let me be honest. I love the commentaries on Futurama. I think they're among the best commentaries I've ever heard, and they just add to the rewatch value of the episodes. But a lot of Family Guy commentaries have been... just... blah. Maybe it's because they choose mediocre episodes to do commentaries on "Ready, Willing, and Disabled," "Death Lives," "Holy Crap," etc. But the commentaries on here really make this DVD worth it, I think. The commentary for "Rhode To Road Island" - I like it, it's great, it's hilarious, you should hear it. It's already one of my favorite episodes, this just made it better. The "To Love and Die In Dixie" commentary was okay, nothing special. But two episodes I'd always wished they had done commentaries on but didn't - "I Am Peter, Hear Me Roar" and "Lethal Weapons" - they finally did here! Excellent! In particular I thought the "I Am Peter, Hear Me Roar" commentary was one of the best they've done. There's nothing new with the "When You Wish Upon A Weinstein" from the Season 3 DVD.

In conclusion, the new commentaries make it worth your while to check this DVD out. As for plunking down the money, I could see Family Guy fanatics doing that, easily, I'm not so sure the casual fan will think this is worth the investment. It's definitely worth a video store rental though, absolutely.

i like this movie because i can thank god everyday that my children dont treat me this way my children are very respectful and thank god my 7 year old dont talk to me the way stewie talks to his mom

I decided to buy this DVD because my 14year old daughter loves Family Guy. We bought it for her for her birthday. She watched it that same night and loved the whole DVD. It was funny, and entertaining.

Very funny in a surprising way. It's like the Archie Bunker of the cartoon world turned up a notch. You can watch them again and again and not get bored because you will always catch something new. Although it is totally politically correct so you need a stable since of self and knowledge of the world around you and an ability to laugh at it to totally enjoy.

This was a great deal. I surprised my niece with this collector's set for Christmas & the pictures & video taken of her when she first realized what it was, was just precious! She had to do a double take & then she asked me' Are you serious?"..I think she thought it was just a box I got from somewhere & it wasn't really what it said it was.
I know I got value for my money because I did shop around. TV series do cost some big $ sometimes & so I feel I got a great deal getting this for her.
She absolutely loves this & watches every day. No complaints at all from here. She says it is a "Freakin Sweet deal!"

family guy is halarious! i havent watched this yet, but i figured for the price i'll take it...ive seen i think all family guys and i know i cant go wrong.

Classic Family Guy episodes from the past. Not bad, but then again very few episodes are. If you want a sure thing for humor this is it. If you like South Park, Family Guy is for you. The "flashbacks" are worth the price alone. So just buy the damn thing already!!!!
