The Lawrence family consisted of lawyer and patriarch Doug (James Broderick), housewife and mother Kate (Sada Thompson), and their children Nancy (Baxter), Willie (Gary Frank), and pre-teen Buddy (McNichol). The first two seasons follow the family through trials and tribulations that include Nancy's divorce, Buddy's first job, and a friend of Willie's who comes out of the closet.
