War never changes.... and neither does Fallout 3

PROS:
- Great presentation with a lots of details
- Well achieved post-apocalyptic scenarios
- Huge detailed cities and landscapes with a lot of freedom to do pretty much whatever you want
- Every decision you make affects how the world around you reacts
- Classic Fallout story that doesn’t disappoint
- Interesting combat modes
- Great animations and effects (specially the gore stuff)
- Leveling up for perks is a lot of fun and becomes addictive
- Lots of cool & creative weapons
- Long single player campaign (around 25 hours that can be expanded to over 100 with all of the side quests and they are fully re-playable as an evil or good character)

CONS:
- Some minor bugs & glitches
- A little more details in the characters would have been good, but they are ok
- No multiplayer, but hey! Fallout never had one so just contemplate the greatness of its singleplayer.

*Just as a WARNING, this is a Role Playing Game and not a First Person Shooter, so don’t except Halo-like action, its different, but equally enjoyable.
*Another warning on this game is that it is not suitable for kids, the dialogs and goreish action is for mature gamers.

OVERALL THOUGHTS:
It is hard to compare this game with first 2 games, as the gameplay mechanics are a bit different, but even standing in the shadow of its predecessors Fallout 3 stands on its own as great game. You’ll immerse into the best post-apocalyptic world ever made

You must have in mind that the developers of this game are the same guys from The Elders Scroll IV: Oblivion, and at first you might feel like playing a modification of that game, but after a while you realize that Fallout 3 is completely unique and in a lot of ways better than Oblivion.

Fans of the series will most probably love the return of the post apocalyptic RPG trades and for new comers the games takes a little time to get used to, but it eventually grows on you in a really nice way and you’ll enjoy all of the huge amount of gadgets, weapons, quests, side quests, characters, humor, enemy dismemberment and complete freedom that Fallout 3 offers.

It is definitely a must-have for hardcore gamers and a serious contender for “game of the year award”. An instant new classic for all gamers, just as its predecessors.

Fallout 3 is a first person/ third person shooter that takes place in Post War Washington D.C. You are basically a person that lives in a vault. (Vault Dweller) and you want to leave. So you break out and have the freedom to explore what you want when you want. Among from meeting new people the game features are incredible. From the 100+ weapons you find ranging from a simple pistol to a mini nuke launcher. And with those weapons you use to blow up things like people, mutants, and other wasteland creatures. I will admit that this isn't a "Kid Friendly" game as it is very violent. But, is definitly great for the mature audience waiting for a great shooter. The only downside I had was freezing, lag, and no online play. But, the story runs for a long time and there are many different ways to play it. I give Fallout 3 a 5/5 for great game play, storyline, and addictiveness.

Fallout 3 sets a new bar of excellence
Review created: 11/13/08

Graphics: Breathtaking 9/10
Sound: Great – 8.5/10
Gameplay: Spectacular – 9.5/10
Replay Value – High (for a single player only game) 9/10
Overall – Near Perfect 9.5/10

Please note: I have never played any prior Fallout Titles, and this is from a n00b prospective.

Graphics: Breathtaking 9/10
The graphics are make you look twice – When you first exit the vault and see the landscape, you think to yourself “what next”? The graphic interface, use of PiP Boy and the movements really show that Bethesda took the time and care to make this well worth your hard earned money.

Sound: Great – 8.5/10
The sounds, music, effects, and voices take you immediately into the game. The time specific music, the radio channels, and the voice acting are all A+. The reason for the slightly lower mark is the repetitiveness of the radio, some of the sound effects, but overall, a lot of time, and thought, went into putting in effective music, voice acting and emphasis, and surrounding wasteland. The best, yet simplistic feeling is when you first turn on this gam for the first time, and all you hear is the old 50’s radio sparking on with the tube. Well done.

Gameplay: Spectacular – 9.5/10
Smooth animations, huge world design, and interactive and smart A.I. This game can be streamlined to do the main quest, or you can help the citizens of wasteland in their personal affairs. The single player game takes a lot of chances, but succeeds, in making the player make hard choices and customizing the game to their own path. Some find out too late that it is important to make hard choices to choose which attributes to build up. This aspect alone warrants multiple play times.

Some critics and players are commenting on the ending (no spoiler), but I must say that for the amount of customization a person can have in this game, it goes right along with the story.

Replay Value – High (for a single player only game) 9/10
Even without multiplayer, this game has replay value with the limitless ways you can play as – via good, bad, neutral, thief, etc. This did not feel like an RPG to me, and was well done to the point that I am on my second playthrough.

Overall – Near Perfect 9.5/10
I am not a fan of RPG’s, nor long drawn out games over 30+ hours, but I was swept away in this post apocalyptic wasteland. This holiday season is rough with the shear amount of great games, and this is definitely in the Top 5 for contention of game of the year.

This would normally be a game I would run from, but I rented it, and then bought it. It is so engrossing that others will want to watch you play and help you make those hard choices.

The game is not perfect, but close to. The story flows, as with the action, and it makes you feel as if you were there with your character trying to survive.

It has elements taken from genres such as RPG, puzzlers, action-adventures, but is not pigeonholed into this experience and to say it is an RPG is gives too little credit. This is an experience that should be played by any hardcore gamer.

  Awesome Game!!!!!!

There is so much to do in this game...it is totally awesome! MY fiance and I play it all the time. We are hooked! There are so many places to go and so many things and quests you can do. You can choose to kill one person while choosing to let another person live. You can play the game the way YOU want to play. I've been to places that my fiance hasn't been to yet, and he's been to places I haven't been to yet. He killed the Overseer in Vault 101 and I was able to let the guy live and the scenarios are endless as to what we've done differently. This has to be my favorite game. It's not always action and shooting, but when you want it you can find it. You're not on one specific course. You can be involved in 5 or more different quests at one time and choose which one you want to do 1st or you can choose not to do any and just go through scavenging or shooting people. It's overall a great game!

Pretty solid RPG, not so great shooter
Review created: 03/08/09
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The RPG end of it is very cool, although definitely not for kids. Open environment and non-linear missions give it the feel of legitimate choice-based RPG. The 1st person shooter aspect is a little clunky. It takes forever to kill anything and aiming is very difficult. They try to incorporate a hybrid turn-based RPG style combat mode into the brawls but they seem pretty ineffective, too. I'm only a few hours into the game so hopefully this gets easier. Small critters like bloatflies and radroaches can devastate you HP before you reach your mission destination because it takes about 20 rounds to kill them. This costs you cash, which is pretty scarce, and time. All in all so far so good. Hopefully as the character gets stronger the random animals will be less threatening and more of a nuisance. Story is pretty good in a dark humor kind of way.

I haven't taken this game out of my console since I got it. It's a great game, there's a lot of stuff to do and see. You can pretty much do what ever you want to do when ever you want to do it. I can see myself playing this game more than one time through, since each time could be very different based on the decisions you make and the path you take. If you don't have it yet, get it!

Fallout 3: Oblivion Meets Post-Apocalyptic Mayhem
Review created: 02/02/09
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If you liked Oblivion, you will enjoy Fallout 3. Though having the same themes as earlier fallouts, the game is completely based on an upgraded Oblivion engine. The world seems a little smaller than that of Oblivion, but is plently large enough to fill hours of time exploring. The world is full of very imaginative, beautiful landscapes- even if not as colorful as the Oblivion counter parts. I found the story line to be engaging and interesting, and the side quests are fun too. The only major draw back is that the game has a tendency to freeze when using the VATS targeting system. So make sure to save often and with multiple save files. Do NOT depend on auto-save.

  Amazing in Every Way
Review created: 01/29/09
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

A lot of games make a big deal out of player choice, but few in recent memory offer so many intricate, meaningful ways of approaching any given situation. You fulfill or dash the spiritual hopes of an idyllic society, side with slavers or their slaves, and decide the fate of more than one city over the course of your postapocalyptic journey through the Washington, DC wasteland. Your actions have far-reaching consequences that affect not just the world around you but also the way you play, and it's this freedom that makes Fallout 3 worth playing--and replaying. It's deep and mesmerizing, and though not as staggeringly broad as the developer's previous games, it's more focused and vividly realized.
This focus is obvious from the first hour of the game, in which character creation and story exposition are beautifully woven together. It's an introduction best experienced on your own rather than described in detail here, but it does set up Fallout 3's framework: It's the year 2277, and you and your father are residents of Vault 101, one of many such constructs that shelter the earth's population from the dangers of postnuclear destruction. When dad escapes the vault without so much as a goodbye, you go off in search of him, only to find yourself snagged in a political and scientific tug of war that lets you change the course of the future. As you make your way through the decaying remnants of the District and its surrounding areas (you'll visit Arlington, Chevy Chase, and other suburban locales), you encounter passive-aggressive ghouls, a bumbling scientist, and an old Fallout friend named Harold who has, well, a lot on his mind. Another highlight is a diminutive collective of Lord of the Flies-esque refugees who reluctantly welcome you into their society, assuming that you play your cards right.

The city is also one of Fallout 3's stars. It's a somber world out there, in which a crumbling Washington Monument stands watch over murky green puddles and lurching beasts called mirelurks. You'll discover new quests and characters while exploring, of course, but traversing the city is rewarding on its own, whether you decide to explore the back rooms of a cola factory or approach the heavily guarded steps of the Capitol building. In fact, though occasional silly asides and amusing dialogue provide some humorous respite, it's more serious than previous Fallout games. It even occasionally feels a bit stiff and sterile, thus diminishing the sense of emotional connection that would give some late-game decisions more poignancy. Additionally, the franchise's black humor is present but not nearly as prevalent, though Fallout 3 is still keenly aware of its roots. The haughty pseudogovernment called the Enclave and the freedom fighters known as the Brotherhood of Steel are still powerful forces, and the main story centers around concepts and objectives that Fallout purists will be familiar with.

Although some of that trademark Bethesda brittleness hangs in the air, the mature dialogue (it's a bit unnerving but wholly authentic the first time you hear 8-year-olds muttering expletives) and pockets of backstory make for a compelling trek. There are more tidbits than you could possibly discover on a single play-through. For example, a skill perk (more on these later) will enable you to extract information from a lady of the evening, information that in turn sheds new light on a few characters--and lets you complete a story quest in an unexpected way.

  Fallout 3 is sweet
Review created: 01/20/09
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Great game a friend recommended to me. I love this game. I usually play shooter games online but decided to give this single player only game a shot. What I like the most about this game is the freedom to explore the map and complete missions in any order you want. You can choose how your character interacts with others and of coarse level up different aspects of the character. You can be a cold blooded killer and thief to get the job done or a charismatic Mr Nice guy, etc.... You always have different options to respond to different situations and scenerios. So you can beat this game and start over and do things completely different. Graphics and music are sweet. Fallout 3 is a great game.

Is this Elder Scrolls V? No, its Fallout 3
Review created: 01/19/09
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Fallout 3 takes place in the aftermath of nuclear apocalypse. The landscape is littered with ruins of cities and broken cars. Radiation killed off most of the animals in the world, while horribly mutating the others. The humanity survived through the holocaust by taking shelter in radiation-proof underground vaults. That is where you come in. You grow up in Vault 101 with your father watching over you. Suddenly and without warning your father leaves the Vault and you are forced to follow him into the Wasteland.

Pros:
- Fallout 3 has an awesome amount of detail within its world. There are hundreds of places for you to explore each offering a unique challenge to the player. Non-player characters have their own daily schedules and routines.
- The voice acting in the game is top notch with many different actors doing their part to bring different characters to life.
- The quests in the game are done with creativity and they can be completed in numerous different ways. This adds to the fun and realism within the game world.
- The character's faces and hands are nicely done, and the monsters are rendered with grotesque detail.
- The combat system in the game is pretty innovative. It offers something for everyone. If you like to run in guns blazing, you can do that. AND if you wish to freeze time and aim for a body part from a safe distance using strategy, the game allows that too.

Cons:
- Fallout 3 feels too much like Oblivion with a more limited character development system. In Fallout 3 there is a level cap in your character of 20, and you level up by doing the following: doing quests, hacking computers, lock picking, and of course killing monsters. That's it. Oblivion's level-up system is far more innovative and is centered around different skills.
- Fallout 3 contains a few glitches. While these glitches are rare when they do happen they pop the illusion of 'the living world'.

Other Notes: The game is very violent with enemies loosing their body parts on regular bases. Profanity and drug use can also be found here.

Ive been playing it almost 88 hours so far and the game keeps getting more and more interesting, dark and dangerous. Every quest is awesome but the only thing I found to dislike is the glitches that sometimes occur. Its like the game suddenly stops and the graphics appear sometimes as things flying. Besides that its the best.

As of 11/2008 this is the best PS3 game out there!
Review created: 11/12/08(updated 12/10/08)

Despite the fact that this is my first experience with a Fallout game, I was completely enthralled with story and game play, the plot of which I have been careful to barely mention at all. That said, I do not know if it is an experience that will satiate the cultish Fallout fans' appetite. For me, it was an epic experience from beginning to end with engaging narrative, a rewarding combat system, brilliantly designed atmosphere, oodles of side quests, and hundreds of choices to drive the experience. To sweeten the pot, Fallout 3 offers over 200 variant endings for a tailor-made finale that cleverly incorporates screenshots taken throughout your game. Do not miss out on one of the most enjoyable, epic RPGs to come along in years... and proof that Bethesda listened to its fans.

I bought this game for my husband. He doesnt like many games and he is very picky about what games he owns. Once he rented this game he was determined to own it. It is very thourough and you can tell alot of time was put into making this. The main thing about it is that you can customize your character, not only by looks but by personality. There are questions being asked throughout the game and it builds your personality so the game is different for EVERYONE. We highly recomment this game it is well worth the money.

  This game rocks!
Review created: 11/04/08

I've been waiting months for this game to hit the shelves and it was no disappointment. Your character is very developed and the quests can end in so many different ways. You have so much freedom in this game and the map boundaries are practically nonexistent.

The map is so huge it's hard to even describe it. Objects that are tiny spec on the horizon slowly come to life as you approach them from miles away. It's unlike any other game i've ever played.

I've never played Oblivion (a game from the same game studio) but I understand it's remarkably similar to it.

The only thing that i found disappointing in the game was the fact that enemies can take a blow from a shotgun pointblank to the head and still persist after you. And it temporarily freezes occasionally (for 2-3 seconds). I take it as a reminder to save the game lol.

In response to my own comment about the shotgun pointblank to the head, you do have to take into consideration that this is't purely a first person shooter...

The outcome of your attacks are the combination of that you (the player) is capable of, and also the stats and attributes that your char can do. (I've shot at things pointblank and missed) Just because your crosshairs are on the target doesn't mean that the bullet will make contact.

But that is not a bad thing... It's just the nature of the game. It's not a first person shooter. When i want to play one of those I can always fire up Call of Duty 4.

In short, this game rocks!!! 5/5 or a 9/10

My friend persuaded me to buy this game so I decided to check on ebay to see how much it cost. Since it cost $51 brand new i decided to give it a shot. I have to admit, the game has a lot of detail for both the story and the game play. The first time I played the game, I could not put it down. Normally I do not like shooting games but fallout 3 gives you the ability to take turns shooting like a rpg.
