I strongly recommend this book to everyone, because it's a great book about a great author, who endured hardship coming from her own family. I guarantee that it'll provide insight for many of us because it teaches us to become strong and to never give up.

Falling Leaves by Adeline Yen Mah
Review created: 02/26/07

I enjoyed reading this nonfiction book. In retelling of childhood in China, one learns about everyday Chinese life. The author's prose motivates one to continue reading. The second half of the book could have provided more details. She remarries and has another child. How did the author raise her children? Does she feel fulfilled in her nuclear family now? One can only assume as no details are given. The author states often that her need for family is not about the money involved. Yet, money is the focus of the adult portrayed in the book. I thought the photos and Chinese sayings added to the text but feel an epilogue would be of benefit.

  Beautifully written

Rather than the typical outsiders stance on Chinese life, this is a Mrs. Mah's account of what happened in her own life. If you're interested in Chinese culture that isn't force fed by Chinese government or American government, this is a good book to begin with.

a sad story that touches the heart
Review created: 11/09/06

This book is definately worth picking up. I was hooked from beginning to end, but I must say this book is a tear jerker. The horrible things the author goes through will make you want to change the world. I really think it's worth anyone's time and should not be taken lightly. It is, after all, the modern history of China from a different perspective.

I really liked this book because it was non-fiction but kept you inturested like a good fiction novel. I decided to buy it because I had heard somewhere that (a review) it was a good book and exceptional read. They were right! The book also made me cry at times because no one should have to go through Adeline went through.

  Not what I expected..

Falling into the belief that the book was about being born a girl child into Chinese culture that limited births to one per family, I purchased this book.
That is not the story here! It is a tale of being ignored and neglected as a member of the family after her mother dies, and her Dad remarries. The neglect
becomes worse after new children are added to the family. This book is about the authors feelings of wanting to be loved by her father and step-mother. It is a story of a truely disfunctional group that struggles between old traditions and new. I enjoyed the book after I finally realized the direction the book was heading in.
