Taking up where the Manga left off

FAKE continues the adventures from the manga of the same name with our hero couple and all of the side characters showing up. If you don't know the characters from the manga, you may wonder why some of them behave the way they do, but the plot is good and the characters consistent. My only irritation is the way the scenes jump from serious plot development to zany comedy in a split second. However, this seems to be common to almost all manga and animie, so fans of either should be used to this schizo pacing.

I was really taken in by this charming, anime OVA. I am a gay man, and my partner and I really enjoy anime, but are usually annoyed by the stereotypical depiction of gay men in anime (you know the scrawny, doe eyed, figure that is so feminised you have to play rock-paper-scissors to decide if its male or female!)Not all gay people are like that, and it was nice to see a acknowledgement of that in an anime, finally. "Fake" is about two New york police partners (in more ways than one), who are trying to get away on vacation. Only problem is they find themselves right in the middle of murder mystery! The relationship between the two main characters was sweet, and funny without being over sexualised. (it could be PG if Gay love wasn't considered so taboo). The Story was also pretty good, with a bit of action, mystery, and even the supernatural thrown into the mix! (who doesn't love a ghost story?)That was another thing we really loved, the fact that the two main characters were gay, but that was not what the plot revolved around. I understand that it is and OVA ( a direct to video special), based on a manga(comic) of the same name.
The only reason I didn't give it an "excellent" is because this movie is it! that's all they made, aside from the comic. I enjoyed it so much, I truly wish there were more of this, a series, or a few more movies, perhaps in the future?
Honestly, I could recommend this for fans of Yaoi, and I doubly recommend it for any gay guys out there, looking for a rare diamond to add to your DVD collection! And I think even straight guys would enjoy it, if they are secure enough in there own sexuality not to be afraid of two guys kissing. ; )

When I say good, I mean for the fans of the series. Not just anyone can pick this up and understand what's going on. In fact, you'd be majorly confused if you did.
NOTE: This OVA does contain homosexual references and scenes. Just so you know. (And if you're reading this, you probably do.)
Since I'm going to assume the people reading this know the characters and story for the most part, I'll give a very brief summary: The story follows the lines of one of the last cases in the manga series. Ryo and Dee go on vacation together in England only to get caught up in a case. Bikky and Carol show up too to cause some mischief. (For some reason, in the English dubs it sounds like they're calling her Carra. Maybe just a nick name? Maybe I'm hearing it wrong? I don't know.)
Anyway! Lets break this up into categories.
ANIMATION: It's pretty good. At least it stays true to the books. Not the best I've seen in anime but not, by far, the worst. Like I said, if you like the art in the manga, this will suit you fine.
ENGLISH DUBS: Actually, they're pretty good. The words match the mouth movements pretty well and the voices sound like they could go with the character. I was most impressed with Bikky's voice. (He's so cute.) Sometimes, they state the obvious like when Bikky and Dee are knocking at Ryo's door. They're obviously knocking frantically and loudly and Ryo waits for a few seconds and then says "Sounds like someone's knocking." No... really? *sarcasm* Also, some of the other characters' voices sound a little odd, like J.J. and Dee and Ryo's co-workers at the police station. That can all be forgiven though, since they're not around much.
JAPANESE VOICES: These are better than the English, I think. The sounds of Dee's and Ryo's voices are pretty good as are Bikky's and Carol's. I like the Japanese voices more than the English dubs, but that's just my personal taste.
SUBTITLES: Again, pretty good. I don't know how accurate they are, but I didn't find any real problem with them except that they call Carol "Cal" through the whole thing. (It seems they call her that in Japanese too.)
OTHER: Like, I said, pretty good over-all. Short at only one hour but it gives a nice view of what the manga would be like animated. It does have some cursing and some sexual themes, but, really, it adds to the realism of the characters. There are no bonus features but I don't know what they could have put in as a bonus except for the full opening theme song (which is awesome).
Cute, fun, but not for everybody. All-in-all, it was worth a couple of bucks but I wouldn't go spending a fortune on a copy. If you're not a big fan of the mangas, it's not worth buying. But if you are, I think you'll be pretty pleased with it.
