On FAKE SURFERS, the Intelligence's third record on In the Red, the west coast synth-punk band led by A-Frames drummer Lars Finberg create a dark, chaotic carnival of sounds. Familiar keyboard and guitar textures anchor what is otherwise an enigmatic musical pastiche. "F*ck Eat Skull" bangs away in a lo-fi trench not unlike the one inhabited by the song's namesake; "Debt & E.S.P." is steeped in pulsating '80s New Wavisms; and "Warm Transfers" recalls the decrepitude of Weimar Germany via the digital present. Though a rock record at the end of the day, FAKE SURFERS is unlike almost anything being made in the late '00s underground. The album revels in its unconventionalness, and seethes with a strange energy that gleefully distorts whatever conventional pop elements might stumble their way into the sonic funhouse.
