Useful but disappointing...
I used this film in a 9th grade high school English class upon completion of the book. The students in my class greatly enjoyed the book but were largely disappointed with the film. There are major deviations from the book in characters (a 16-year-old girl becomes a grown school teacher and Faber does not exist) and setting (the train rides are quiet and peaceful instead of full of blaring commercials). Because of either production-related limitations or carelessness, many powerful details disappear from the story (the cars drive at average speeds and there is no reference to the violent nature of the society). However, I thought the film's depiction of the "Book People" society was very well done. I found it worthwhile to show in class because it stimulated conversation about how the students imagined the story and also increased the students' appreciation of the book.
