Fabled Flowers by Kumiko Sudo (1996, Paperback, Illustrated)

Right off I have to confess I am a huge Kumiko Sudo fan. I have this book and three others she has written. More than her patterns (which are lovely _and_ clear), the inclusion of sashiko (japanese quilting) patterns, or the sheer amount of choices in each excellently formatted book it is Kumiko's easy tone and nostalgic writing that endears her to me. little vignette's in writing like tiny jewelled fairy tales. I love jasmine and sandlewood and Kumiko's writing is a visual version of my favorite olfactory experiences.
Technically this book is exquisite. There are clear diagrams, clear patterns (and a lot of them), and lovely pictures to help you with color and pattern selection. I would not say, however, that a beginning applique artist could just pick this up and run with it. I would suggest first aquiring some basic applique skills. Elly Sienkiewicz' Applique 12 Easy Ways!, Eleanor Burns' Applique in a Day, or Mimi Deitrich's book on Baltimore Album applique are are wonderful for the beginning applique artist.
There is a total of 30 block designs, each with it's own sashiko pattern, and 6 quilt designs included in this book. I suggest spending an afternoon, or several, studying and creating the delicacy that is Kumiko Sudo's Fabled Flowers.
