I believe this is Kubrick's greatest film. While every one of his films, to me, has at least one area of complete brilliance, be it techincal, thematic, or just atmospheric, here all is part of a glorious whole. Every note is hit just right: even the bits of comedy come as entirely fitting, surprisingly they do not come off as an agitation and do not break tension. But perhaps this was a close issue to Kurbick, as he always had a sort of preoccupation with sexuality. On the surface it is primarlily an anti-adulterly message movie, but it's the sub-themes and little details that make the film so entrancing: the nature of the mystery is an essential element of the film. As Bill is so overcome by curiosity he just hasto go to the secret orgy, we are instantly engaged by the film's hypnotic atmosphere.
