Blue Oyster Cult's third live album was released at a time when the band was making a mini comeback in the early '80s thanks to its prior studio album, FIRE OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN. Featuring material recorded during the Black and Blue Tour that BOC did with Black Sabbath, EXTRATERRESTRIAL LIVE bristles with energy thanks to a set in which instrumental excesses are kept to a minimum. These hand-picked tracks represent an excellent cross-section of BOC's impressive oeuvre dating back to the band's beginnings. Early nuggets such as "Cities on Flame," "Hot Rails to Hell," and "Red & the Black" (later covered by the Minutemen and fIREHOSE) are included alongside Blue Oyster Cult's Top 40 hits "Don't Fear the Reaper" and the more recent smash "Burnin' for You." BOC also serves up other UNKNOWN ORIGIN standout songs that included the clever horror movie-themed "Joan Crawford" and "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" (which was included on the soundtrack to the animated classic HEAVY METAL). Specific highlights include Robbie Krieger joining BOC on his former band's "Roadhouse Blues" and a nearly eight-minute rendition of "Godzilla" in which these hard rock giants proved their might as one of the more formidable live acts of the day.
