Album Notes On the somewhat misleadingly titled EXTENDED PLAY TWO (actually the fourth single off of the album THE NOISE MADE BY PEOPLE), Broadcast have embraced a meticulously crafted, tripped-out sound that suggests Stereolab meeting John Barry in an Italian spy thriller soundtrack from the 1970s. Featuring one remixed album track, this EP also features 4 additional cuts, all of which explore the band's studiously cinematic sweep. The opening track occasionally recalls Neil Diamond's "Song Sung Blue," albeit with a dose of feedback and an eye towards trip-hop. "Unchanging Window / Chord Simple" highlights some cool, fuzzed-out synthesizers over an almost martial snare drum beat. The unsettling instrumental "A Man For Atlantis," begins with a series of jerking stop-starts and progresses to include a number of weirdly bubbling synth noises, wet thuds, and heavy-duty echoes. On "Poem of Dead Song," the band furthers the Ennio Morricone sound that haunted the first EXTENDED PLAY release, though the vocals suggest cocktail parties around a kidney-shaped coffee table. Rounding out the record is "Drums on Fire," another instrumental, which highlights an elastic bassline augmented by distant crashing cymbals.
Editorial Reviews ...They parallel their imagined John Barry scores with their loop, sample and drone experiments....exploiting these methods with real finesse... The Wire (03/01/2000)
