Exploring North Manitou, South Maitou, High and Garden Islands of the Lake Michigan Archipelago by Robert H. Ruchoft (1991, Paperback)

I bought this book because it has great descriptions of both South and North Manitou Islands in Lake Michigan in Leelanau County, Michigan (part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore). You can take a ferry from Leland to South Manitou every day. You have only a limited time on the island, so having this book to plan your trip is great. It also has very good maps of many trails on the island.

I visit North Manitou Island less often (you have to camp overnight if you take the ferry from Leland). This book is just as useful for North Manitou and there are a number of nature sights on North Manitou.

I've never visited the other islands covered in the book, but I hope to some day - partly because of the interesting descriptions in the book.

Whether you actually visit the islands, or just want to read about what a visit could be like, this is a great book.

I highly recommend it.
