Explode the Code 1 by Nancy Hall (1984, Paperback)

I educated my child at home for kindergarten this year. I bought the Explode The Code beginning reading workbooks (I bought books 1, 1.5 and 2) to supplement and expand on the work that we were already doing.

Book 1 is quite basic, so we put it to the side and began work in book 2. I like that the lessons introduce a letter sound and then offers several seat-work type lessons to reinforce the letter sound.

This type of learning is useful for a student who will tolerate seat work types of activities. The lessons could be adapted for students who learn best through either auditory or a hands-on means as well.

The only aspect of the lessons that I wasn't thrilled with were the graphics. They're just visually dull and in some of the pictures it's difficult to tell what they were trying to communicate.

Over all, the program is good for teaching & supplementing reading through phonics based methods that reinforce the lessons learned.

This book is great for teaching a child to read. Used by many homeschoolers, so i decided to give it a try. I am using the system on 2 kids!

I've used this series to teach four of my children to read, two of which could read before kindergarten. It was recommended to me by a friend who homeschooled her children. I like how the format promotes independent work by the child. The pictures and situations in the sentences are very silly, which makes learning fun for the child. The vowels are brought in one at a time, so the child learns each one before moving on. All of the vowels in the book are short sound, so they are learned well before adding new rules that might be confusing. Overall, I think this book did an excellent job focusing the process of learning to read so that I could teach my own children (I have no education degree).

Very specific matrerial. Easy enough for kids but direct needed things for their learning. Repetitive work that children need. I like it in theis soft cover book format. Easy to carry with you while traveling.

I have used this to supplement my child learning to read. It is enjoyable for the child and has enough repetition to jump start/improve their reading.
