The Remains Of The Day

A more accurate rating would be seven out of ten; but since the scale is one to five, I choose four instead of three, because I'd rather round up than down in this case.
This little CD is basically composed of musical scraps, so don't expect too much!
I didn't, and though I hoped for more, I was satisfied with what I got.
I must admit that I'm a huge fan of Jimi Hendrix, and in particular, Jimi's early work with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, so take that into consideration. As great as Jimi was, I think Mitch and Noel added a lot to the band. Mitch was a fantastic drummer, and that has been generally acknowledged; but I think Noel's contributions to the band were valuable also. I know Noel's (bass) playing has been criticized by some; but I like his style. I really enjoyed the whole sound of the band, you see. I also much enjoyed the two songs Noel wrote for the Experience: LITTLE MISS STRANGE and SHE'S SO FINE. Of the two, I believe the second one is finer. Heh.
Of course, there's little doubt that Jimi's guitar playing elevated both of the songs. Both appear twice- in different versions.
There are a few other nice bits as well. Noel's writing style tends to English Pop/Rock. His voice sounds a little like John Lennon, but his singing is not quite as strong or dynamic as John's. There is a 'trippy' aspect to some of the music, which makes it more interesting.
There's at least one track of just Noel playing guitar. He's not bad, actually. Not brilliant or anything, but the music is pleasant.
There's a version Red House here, also. I'd never heard this particular version (it was probably previously unreleased, I can't recall), but unfortunately it's not a very strong one. Then again, if you are a hardcore Jimi Hendrix fan, you like to leave no stone unturned, right ?
Look, I'm probably a better guitar player than Noel Redding was in some aspects (that's on guitar, not bass guitar); and thousands (tens of thousands?) of guys in the UK and USA could say the same. Having said that, I still find this to be an interesting little work. I'll enjoy listening to it from time to time.
Those who have no interest in Jimi Hendrix or 60's British Pop may find this CD a waste of time; but I'm glad I bought it, and would buy it again. The fact that it can be purchased at a very reasonable price doesn't hurt, either.
Goodbye, Noel.
