It will stir up so many emotions within you that it is unbelievable. The best King Arthur movie (in my opinion) of all time.

A Great Story about the Arthurian Legend.
Review created: 06/04/08

Although this is an old movie, the story is pretty good and in spite of the fact that it is filmed using 80's technology, it is still a good film. Anyone who loves Arthurian legends will appreciate it.

Would love to comment on the item, but I NEVER RECEIVED IT. He took my money and ran! Apparently did the same with other buyers. I didn't spend much for it, but I would have liked to receive what I paid for.

  Closest To the Legend
Review created: 12/04/07(updated 05/06/08)

The film is visually stunning. One could almost freeze-frame any point at random and find a beautifully composed image. The film is the most faithful to Sir Thomas Mallory's Le Morte d'Arthur, but it still misses a lot. For instance, the sword of the title was not removed from a stone: that was another sword. Excalibur was given to Arthur by The Lady of the Lake later on in the tale. However, as noted, it is much closer to its origin than virtually any other film done on the Arthurian legend.

The genesis of Arthur is told well, and Merlin's relationship to both Arthur and his father are true to the tale. The scope of the entire Mallory work is nearly epic, so any film has to pick only high points in order to stick within the time constraints of feature films.

Within the film, though, there was some interesting symbology, particularly the coming of Christianity to Britain, thus ousting the Pagan gods' influence. When Morgana bore Mordred, (actually, Margawse -- never identified in the film -- actually bore Mordred in the Mallory work) and the kid grew up, there was bronze-age symbolism about him. His armor had Pagan imagry, which underscored the effect.

One area in the film that really bothered me was the Holy Grail sequence. The original work had some frankly religious symbolism about it, but all this was chucked, and the utility of the Grail was misplaced (it never was brought to Camelot by the Grail Knights). Boorman would have had a better film if he'd eliminated that sequence altogether.

All that being said, the film still captured the spirit of the Mallory work, which was rich and complex. As with the original, the film captures the esence of Merlin as the motivator/power behind the throne. It also includes, if doesn't completely explain, some of the other elements of the legend, such as the three ladies sending Arthur's body to Avalon.

Although the film is far from perfect, it is extraordinarily beautiful. It's better viewed widescreen on DVD.

  Great movie!
Review created: 11/09/07

This is the classic King Aurthur movie. Knights, swords, lust, magic, & religion are all on display as the story of King Aurthur (Nigel Terry) is shown from his birth to his treacherous death at the hands of his son Mordred (although Arthur manages to take Mordred with him).

Captain Picard, I mean Patrick Stewart is also in the film as one of Arthur's knights (King Leondegrance) who was the first noble to ally himself with Arthur when Arthur acquired the sword Excalibur.

Merlin (Nicol Williamson) is an interesting character - shown both as a maipulative schemer but also one who wants the best for Arthur and the people of England.

Lancelot's lust for Guenevere and her affair with him threaten to destroy the kingdom, and leads to the search for The Holy Grail of Christ (no not the Monty Python version).

The final battle when the old but re-invigorated King Arthur leads a make or break assault against Mordred's knights ends the movie, and sadly Arthur's life as well.

This is a movie that can be watched multiple times.

Ok, let's get some things straight- firstly, there is absolutely NO historical significance in this movie; not in the costumes, not the armor, not even the premise of the story or its characters. Having said that, for those of us who are Arthurians (fans of King Arthur and his lore) - you'll love this movie. Yes, it is over 25 years old so the special effects are not nearly as eye-catching as they are today, but the story itself is timeless and well worth the viewing. See the movie, live the experience.

A strange but enjoyable entry into the Arthur legend

A beautiful take on the legend of Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Gorgeous cinematography, with scores from Wagner operas used throughout. A little overlong, but a nice afternoon movie, even if a bit "loopy" at times (particularly in the case of Nicol Williamson's Merlin.)

Bonuses: young Liam Neeson, and Patrick Stewart with hair!

This is one of my favorite all time movies but I was unable to find it in any store to add to my collection. I've found that ebay is the place to look first for any item. This is a wonderful movie that I can watch over and over again forever.

  Excalibur, well worth the watch!
Review created: 12/04/06

This movie shows how real midevil knights would fight. Hollywood has knights fighting and swinging and stabbing for endless amounts of time and effort. This movie uses actual metal armour and real swords that weight about 50lbs each. So a knight having full armour would actually be able to do a few swings and or movements at best. Should a knight fall or be knocked down it would be fatal because of the weight he would not be able to get back on his feet. The endless love triangle and deceit is a given. This movies portrays how it would really be without the hollywood glamour. The music score has been copied throughout cinema history. The cinematography is fantastic. A well worth watch.

King Arthur has been one of my heros since childhood. This movie was beautifully filmed in Ireland. You see many famous actors that were unknowns when they were in Excalibur, i.e. Helen Mirren, Liam Neeson. It was a very entertaining movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

A brilliant film, but gets the ending all wrong, but this isn't so obvious, because just about 100 percent of all stuff about Arthur and his circular table and laws get Mordred wrong. But brilliant, almost interesting. When will someone get the ending right?
