Closest To the Legend
Review created: 12/04/07(updated 05/06/08)

The film is visually stunning. One could almost freeze-frame any point at random and find a beautifully composed image. The film is the most faithful to Sir Thomas Mallory's Le Morte d'Arthur, but it still misses a lot. For instance, the sword of the title was not removed from a stone: that was another sword. Excalibur was given to Arthur by The Lady of the Lake later on in the tale. However, as noted, it is much closer to its origin than virtually any other film done on the Arthurian legend.
The genesis of Arthur is told well, and Merlin's relationship to both Arthur and his father are true to the tale. The scope of the entire Mallory work is nearly epic, so any film has to pick only high points in order to stick within the time constraints of feature films.
Within the film, though, there was some interesting symbology, particularly the coming of Christianity to Britain, thus ousting the Pagan gods' influence. When Morgana bore Mordred, (actually, Margawse -- never identified in the film -- actually bore Mordred in the Mallory work) and the kid grew up, there was bronze-age symbolism about him. His armor had Pagan imagry, which underscored the effect.
One area in the film that really bothered me was the Holy Grail sequence. The original work had some frankly religious symbolism about it, but all this was chucked, and the utility of the Grail was misplaced (it never was brought to Camelot by the Grail Knights). Boorman would have had a better film if he'd eliminated that sequence altogether.
All that being said, the film still captured the spirit of the Mallory work, which was rich and complex. As with the original, the film captures the esence of Merlin as the motivator/power behind the throne. It also includes, if doesn't completely explain, some of the other elements of the legend, such as the three ladies sending Arthur's body to Avalon.
Although the film is far from perfect, it is extraordinarily beautiful. It's better viewed widescreen on DVD.
