It's fun to watch this movie in light of Evil Dead II, because you can see the different direction Sam Rammi went with subsequent films. This is a much more straight forward horror story, still heavy on the gore and costuming, but lacking the goofy one-liners and bad-ass Ash character. The commentary on the DVD is good if you're interested in that sort of thing, and if for some reason you're looking to make a low budget film of your own they go over set designs, how they were built, and all the other stuff that goes along with movie-making. For the non-film maker the commentary isn't technical, but uses the process as a backdrop to tell funny stories about the making of the movie.
The pacing of the movie--as Bruce Campbell brings up--is much slower at times than a more contemporary slasher film but it adds to the ambiance of the movie and builds tension. If you like horror movies, Bruce Campbell, Sam Rammi, Evil Dead II, or Army of Darkness I would definitely check this movie out.
