With her multi-platinum debut, Deana Carter was hailed as a leading voice of country music in the '90s. With her sophomore album, Carter proves that deep down, she's really a child of the '70s. From the ZZ Top-style boogie guitars that kick off the opening track, "You Still Shake Me" to the funkified groove of "Never Comin' Down" to the cameo appearance by Lynyrd Skynyrd on "The Train Song," Carter proudly wears her musical influences on her sleeve. And who else but Carter, with her sweet, fragile voice, could pull off a remake of Melanie's 1971 hit "Brand New Key?" But despite these vintage touches, the rhythms, lyrics and Carter's vocals remain determinedly modern. An overwhelming theme of freedom--emotional, spiritual and physical--runs through the album, personified by the female protagonists of tracks like "Dickson County," "Angels Working Overtime" and "Ruby Brown." And such songs as "Michelangelo Skies" and "Make Up Your Mind" are an appealing combination of folk, country and pop. With its surprising blend of genres, textures and songs, EVERYTHING'S GONNA BE ALRIGHT is utterly original, and unlike any country album you've ever heard before..
Editorial Reviews ...the new album...is an artistic leap forward. A cohesive blend of L.A. pop and progressive country, with a steel guitar underscoring Carter's Southern drawl, this CD explores connections missed and made... - Rating: B+ Entertainment Weekly (10/23/1998)
3 Stars (out of 5) - ...Carter sharpens her signature sound, singing in a wispy, fluid voice with a much lighter touch than most big-money country stars... Rolling Stone (10/29/1998)
