One of the best books I have ever read. It takes a few pages to get into it because of the broken English it is written in. But does not take long to get into it and love it

  Everything is Illuminated

I had seen the movie of the same title and had loved it. I had also read the author's other book "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" and found his use of language to be fascinating. So, being a believer that you can't judge a book by its movie, I felt compelled to read it and purchased it so I might share with friends. As expected, it far exceeds the movie.

I was suprised. I did not have high hopes for this book but it turned out to be pleasing. Check this one out, it will rattle your brain around alittle bit.

I decided to buy it because my girlfriend was reading it and I thought, "this book looks pretty good and it'll look pretty good if I read it." I was impressed with the book but, it may have been a little over my head but, I'm tenacious and if I want to look for symbolism and over my headish stuff I can talk to her or go to Spark Notes or something right? The reason it's a little bit difficult is that the book is constantly referencing itself and to a lesser extent Jewish Culture (Holocaust and sexual references make this book a difficult to stomach at times, it made me cry in a good way, but, it's not for 8 year olds). There are tons of layers of meaning, I'm not calling you stupid but, don't expect to catch everything. Overall the writing style is enticing to me with a broken language of a broken man trying to write a story in English with the consultation of an American buddy who goes one a hell of a journey with him that they're both writing about.

I wasn't illuminated... by the book at least...

This is one of those rare instances where yes, the MOVIE is actually better than the book! Safran Foer's book has three story lines going on at once, is hard to follow, and leaves the reader with a bad taste in their mouth, if the reader can even muck their way through the book from start to end.

The movie, on the other hand, focuses on the most interesting of the three plot lines, and is fantastic. It stars Elijah Wood and other fantastic but unknown actors. Do yourself a favor and watch the movie instead of reading the book.
